In frigid early February, the last thing most people are thinking about is flowers and warm weather. However, this time is marked by the traditional Japanese lunar calendar as the beginning of spring. Shrine around Kyoto also hold special "Setsubun" events, with Yoshida Shrine's festival being the largest. Held from February 2-4, visitors can come to burn their old lucky charms in a large bonfire, as well as watch performers' dance dressed as read and blue "Oni", or Demon, Ogre. The festival is quite popular. ^^
