If you are interested in Edo (present -day Tokyo) period (1603-1868, from 1603 when  Tokugawa Shogun ruled Japan to 1868 when Tokugawa shogunate was overthrown and the capital and imperial residence were moved from Kyoto to Tokyo and the imperial family  took over the Edo Castle site. Japan's modernization and westernization began then.),  I recommend you to visit Imperial Palace Plaza and Imperial Palace East Gardens. Edo-Tokyo Museum is also a very good place to learn about Edo and Japanese transformation from Edo period to Meiji period (capital is Tokyo). Your guide will also help you to learn about the imperial family, Japanese modernization history, etc.

Following are the English web sites  about  the Implerial Palace.
