Events & Festivals

There are events that Japanese people look forward to every summer, and it was one of that day yesterday.

I was on the train back to Yokohama in the afternoon and saw lots of girls dressed up nicely in summer kimono, yukata. It pretty was obvious that they were going to see the fireworks show held in Yokohama.

The event actually start from 7pm,but it was only little bit after 3pm when I saw them on the train.Kanagawa shinbun firework show which will be held near the Port of Yokohama is pretty famous and bring 200,000people to Yokohama bayarea to see this 1.5hours show. For people who don't have the reserved seat(paying app 2500yen or more for good view) will need to show up way before the show starts to get the good place to enjoy the show.

Fireworks were originally used to ward off the evil spirits.Hundreds of firework shows are held every year across the country, mainly during the summer holidays in July and August, with some of them drawing hundreds of thousands of spectators.

Kanagawa shinbun firework are famous for shooting numbers of "2 shaku dama(1 shaku= app 1feet)" shells which are 58.5cm in diameter and weigh 70kilograms.

Each 2 shaku dama will be about 480 meters across when it explode, coloring the nights sky from 500 meters above.
It is simply amazing and wonderful to see those great art in night sky with music, and they are pretty moving.

You can see how big each of the fireworks are from this video...look very beautiful with Yokohama Minato mirai night lights.

In Japanese,we call fireworks "hanabi". "Hana" means flower and "bi" means fire, which will be"fire flowers" in English.

Come and enjoy Japanese summer nights with gorgeous fire flowers.
