The great political change started in 1868 with Emperor Meiji(1852-1912) at its head, followed by rapid modernization and westernization. As a result, Japan established a constitutional monarchy in 1889. Japanese life style also changed in various aspects such as clothing, social systems, food and culture. It's called enlightenment of civilization. Anpan(the photo above) was created by bakery named Kimuraya in 1875 and they were offered to the Emperor. He was very pleased to eat it and it became his favorite. Anpan is a bread filled with sweet red bean paste. In the case of Kimuraya Anpan, it was characerized by salt flavored cherry blossom petals put into the center dent. This type of Anpan is still standard item and very popular.  Anpan made by Kimuraya relates to my two tours. One is colorful walking tour in Tokyo, in which Meiji Shrine is dedicated to the deified spirit of Emperor Meiji. The other is A one day tour for the first time visitors to Tokyo, in which Kimuraya is on the route. I would like you to eat Anpan of Kimuraya. Why don't you join me?
