General

The Mifune Festival

was held in Arashiyama of Kyoto on May 17th.  The festival originated from the fact that the retired Uda emperor played in a boat in visiting Arashiyama and reproduced to go boating on the Oigawa river near Togetsukyo Bridge.  Mifune literally means three boats and actually traditional performances are held in three boats such as "Gozabune" (roofed pleasure boat), "Ryutosen" (dragon headed boat), and "Gekishusen" (waterfowl neck boat) .

The Kurumazaki Shrine

The Festival has been held as the related festival of Kurumazaki Shrine since 1928.  The shaft of cow carriage of Gosaga Emperor broke down in Arashiyama.  The emperor noticed that he passed in front of the shrine without respecting the god and apologized for his rude behavior.  Actually the word "Kurumazaki" refers to "the broken cow carriage".
