The gate of a feudal lord's mansion
This red gate is the Important Cultural Asset built in 1827 as a gate to the feudal lord's mansion. It is now used for the gate of the University of Tokyo. That's why another name of the University is called Akamon which means Red Gate. The University of Tokyo was founded in 1877 as the first national university in modern Japan. The area of the campus there in the Hongo district is large and woody. It also has many old school buildings.
