Every year, Denmark is ranked as one of the happiest countries in the world. Through a unique combination of mindful strolling, energy medicine exercises and learning about our subtle energies, we will activate our joy from within while experiencing first hand what makes Copenhageners happy.
Circle Bridge (8:50)
One of the most scenic points in the whole harbor, the Circle Bridge by Olafur Eliasson is a functional artwork that will be the starting point for this combined sightseeing experience. After hearing a bit about the development of modern Copenhagen, we will start the exploration of our surroundings and ourselves by checking in with our inner side and setting an intention for this walk. Coming "inland" from the Circle Bridge we will walk around Christianshavn, one of the oldest parts of Copenhagen.
Christian's Church was built 1759 according to the drawings of Nicholas Eigtved, the very same architech behind the Roccoco design of the Amalienborg Palaces, the current royal residence. We will perform our first energy exercises in the beautiful surroundings on the grounds next to the church, and if possible we will give the peculiar, theather-like interior of the church a look.
This idillyc and happy setting by the old warehouses and the passing boats in the canals is the perfect setting to talk about the World Happines Report, a ranking of 156 countries in the world regarding the happiness of their citizens and where Denmark has always been in the top 3 placings since they started publishing it in 2012.
A bridge has existed here since 1618, making Knippelsbro the oldest bridge in Copenhagen. Before using the bridge to cross to Slotsholmen and Sealand - we're on an island-hopping stroll!- we will talk a bit about joy, happiness and the mechanisms we have built in our energy bodies to tap into true inner joy.
Now we're by the Old Stock Exchange which was one of the anchoring points for the first Knippelsbro. This predecessor of today's shopping mall has a truly festive spire: 4 dragons with their tails intertwined and designed by no one less than the very fireworks master of king Christian the 4th... we're now in the perfect location to learn a few easy methods to activate our inner joy.
The Castle of Christiansborg, the 3rd in this same place with the same name is the center of power in Denmark being the headquarters of the 3 powers of state in this constitutional monarchy. Here we will come back to the topic of the Happiness Report and try to understand why Denmark -and other Nordic countries- have been consistently top-ranked as the happiest since the first report was published almost a decade ago.
Following the thread of Christian the 4th. and the many enterprises and buildings he erected during his reign, we have reached the Library Garden, a former war harbor at his time. Today this park is one of the most cherished and peaceful places in the center of Copenhagen. Besides learning about the history of the place, we will experience first-hand how this space is used today by Copenhageners through some awareness exercises.
The Black Diamond was the first planned project in the modernization of the harbor. We saw already its older counterpart from the Library Garden, and now you will be able to see this modern building housing the Royal Library also from the inside, as this will be a place where we will have a brief "pit stop".
Right next to one of the stops of the Havnebus or Harbor Bus -which is actually a boat!-, we will do an observation and presence activity using the sculpture City Fractal by Elisabeth Toubro. This artwork, very industrial and organic at the same time interprets Copenhagen precisely as a fractal: the more you look into it, the more you find.
BLOX stands as one of the newest addition to the waterfront. Opened in 2018, it houses -among many other things- the Danish Architecture Center. Its concept includes both being a miniature city by the waterfront and a link or bridge between the City Hall square and the water. We will cross the underground passage to emerge on the other side towards two sibling bridges: Lille Langebro and Langebro.
Happiness and joy seem sometimes elusive, but looking in the least common places - like under a brigde!- might surprise us. Let's see the secrets Langebro has in store for us :)
We finish our tour in a place where the essence of the renewed harbor is distilled to its purest: Kalvebod Bølge. This favorite summer spot has it all to enjoy the harbor: A floating cafe, swimming areas, sunbathing decks, a kayak hotel and one of the best views of the city. In this final stop, we will do a last practice of the exercises learned and close up with checking in with ourselves to see how the tour has influenced our energy.
