This tour unravels the social and everyday life of the Ancient Athenians. It is a great opportunity to discover the essence of the so-called Athenian Empire, strolling through two of the most important archaeological sites of the city: the Agora and the cemetry, Kerameikos. So, we start from one of the most representative spots for the social life of the Athenians nowadays.
The Agora was the heart of ancient Athens, the focus of political, commercial, administrative and social activity, the religious and cultural centre, and the seat of justice. The site was occupied without interruption in all periods of the city's history. It was used as a residential and burial area as early as the Late Neolithic period (3000 B.C.). and in the 6th century, the Agora became a public area.
It was without a doubt the heart of the city.
It was the potters' quarter of the city, from which the English word "ceramic" is derived, and was also the site of an important cemetery and numerous funerary sculptures erected along the road out of the city. The two best preserved gates from the city's fortification are also part of this site.
