(History of the temple)
This temple is the "Sohonzan" head temple of the Daikakuji faction of Shingonsyu Buddhism sect founded by the Reverend Kobo-daishi Kukai. It was originally built as the villa of Emperor Saga when he got married in early Heian period (794 to 1191) and was later enlarged and given the name Daikaku-ji Temple in 876. It is also the place where "Ikebana" flower arrangement began and the location of Samurai dramas and other modern dramas.
