We were looking for Kyoto tours over two days with my husband and 9-year-old boy, and once we found Masaki's profile we were already sold (he was obviously intellectual and extremely good with families/kids), but literally he surpassed every expectation. Upon booking Masaki ("Makoon") immediately understood what we would need to keep our little boy engaged, so planning was easy from Day 1 (promptly following our initial email exchange we received a detailed, extremely well thought out personalized itinerary from which it was clear he absolutely understood our needs/desires and that we had found the right person). What I didn't expect, however, was that Makoon's two days with us would be the highlight of our entire (and amazing) time in Japan. Makoon is extremely charismatic, well-educat... read more
Dear Heather san, My sincere apology. I've just noticed my response to your wonderful review didn't go through. It's an honor for me to receive a review like yours. It was a thorough East to West Tour of Kyoto. I'm happy to hear you all made a great memory but particularly happy that your son enjoyed and learned about Japanese culture through "Kyoto Passport"! He is definitely extraordinary 9 years old! It's a hard time for all of us because of Corona virus.. please stay healthy and well. Maybe it's a good time to look at all the pictures from the trip! Warm Regards, Masaki Makoon Mori
Masaki was a great story teller and guide. He had a way of making historical sites become stories of human interest rather than just dates and facts. In fact, his personality was one of the attractions of Kyoto. He shared some family insights that allowed us to see a side of Japanese life that normally we wouldn’t know. It was a perfect couple of days. Thanks Masaki and I hope you continue and succeed with all of your personal interests. John & Pearl
Dear Pearl san and John san It's truly an honor for me to hear words like these. I'm also really glad everything worked out nicely including the weather! "his personality was one of the attractions of Kyoto" This is one of my ultimate goals as a tour guide, I can't thank you enough. I will keep studying and really hope to see you again in the future! Warm Regards, Masaki Makoon Mori
First time visit to Kyoto to see autumn foliage and we chosen Makoon as our guide. He made a allergy card for my mum as it could be useful for my mum while we are in japan. We went to Arashiyama and we loved it. He shared with us his knowledge of Japanese culture and Kyoto history. The one day tour with Makoon as our guide is totally worth it. He took some pictures of us and these picture are memorable for us. We had okonomiyaki for lunch and it was yummy. Me and my mum really enjoy the tour and will certainly have Makoon as our guide again if we get to go Kyoto again! Thank you Makoon :)
Dear Krystal san, I'd like to show my appreciation to your kind review. I was glad that you got to see some of the highlights of autumn foliage. It was indeed beautiful especially in that small less known temple! Please enjoy those pictures and remember the great time you spent in Kyoto. Warm Regards, Masaki Makoon Mori
Since this was not the first visit to Kyoto for us, we did not need to visit the places included in the usual Kyoto tour but wanted to learn more about the history of Kyoto. We expressed interest in the Meiji Restoration era and Masaki did a wonderful job taking us to the places that were important in that era, including the history and stories about each place. It was a 5 hour walking tour of "hidden gems" and it did not disappoint. We had the good fortune to have a maiko, a geisha in training, walk by us. Masaki even ordered good weather for for the 6 of us .
Dear Karleen sanm I'd like to appreciate to your kind review! The tour with you was great for me too, as I could really go deep with a lot of hidden gems and secret history of Kyoto! I was really happy to hear you found a lot of new things about Kyoto even though you had come here quite many times! I'm sincerely looking forward to meeting you again. Warm Regards, Makoon
Masaki (Makoon) is an excellent guide. Besides being so knowledgeable, he is charming and fun to be with. We had been to Kyoto before, but Makoon made it seem like a whole new experience. We enjoyed walking in the Gion area and seeing another side to the more formal sights in Kyoto. He was very caring and considerate as my husband has a bit of trouble walking and he made sure we took breaks and walked at his slower pace. I could not have chosen a better guide....just excellent in every way.
Dear Ellyn san, It's truly an honor for me to recieve words like yours. I'd like to thank you again for your decision to come to Kyoto. When you are on a cruise ship, going out for a tour is actually a challenge. Bus tours are not always flexible, public transportation is complicated, and more than anything, time restriction. We saw quite a lot in the limited time, and I'm especially happy to hear it was "a whole new experience"! There's always more in this ancient capital! I'm sincerely looking forward to seeing you again! Warm Regards, Masaki Makoon Mori
We had a wonderful two days in Kyoto with Masaki. He met our group of three - 76, 72, and 37 - At Kyoto station and took us on a fantastic afternoon tour. We went to the Fushimi Inari shrine, then to the Gion district. He himself had experienced a dinner in a geisha establishment, and was able to provide us wonderful information about The history of that culture. When we got tired he knew just where to take us for coffee and refreshment. At the end of the day he took us to a great restaurant for wagyu and Kobe beef – a place we could never have found on our own. The next morning he took us to a beautiful temple where the trees were showing the autumn colors, then to the nearby zen temple, and from there to Nijo Castle. He gave us fascinating information about the history of the sites and u... read more
Dear Molly san, I can't appreciate enough for your kind review. It was great in depth tour especially in the beatiful color of Autumn. It was a great mix of history, culture, nature, city, food, highlights to local, and ... Quilt!! I'm really happy you could spend time in that shop!! As I mentioned, even though we did quite a lot in 2days, there's always more in this ancient capital. I'm sincerely looking forward to seeing you all! Warm Regards, Masaki Makoon Mori
My family and 1 recently spent 1.5 days with Masaki as our guide in Kyoto and Nara. He was very easy to deal with in the planning and extremely well organised throughout. My children (aged 22 and 23) were a bit sceptical about taking a guide but Masaki won them round and they are now saying this was the best bit of the holiday! His English is excellent as is his knowledge of all the sights and culture of Japan, from the blockbuster sights to the small back alleys, but this is delivered in a fun, light way which keeps everyone going. He is very careful to ensure everyone is having a good time and is flexible- this was important on our morning in Nara as it was pouring with rain so we skipped too much walking in the park and made up for it elsewhere. His food recommendations were spot on ... read more
Dear Aileen san, I'd like to express my sincere gratitude to your kind review. Yes, it was raining quite hard on our day2, but we managed to have some great experience, again it's all Wabisabi...! It's an honor to hear I could change your children's view about a tour guide, one can especially make a big difference especially in Kyoto and Nara, these historic cities! As a foodie, I can't let you have a mediocre food! Please enjoy those pictures, and remember the great time you spent in Kyoto. Sincerely looking forward to seeing you again! Warm Regards, Masaki Makoon Mori
Makoon (Masaki) immediately was everything you would hope for in a guide. He was very prompt with all my booking questions and always stayed in contact. He met with me at 6AM! He came to the hotel I was staying at to be my guide (which was so awesome for someone unfamiliar of where to go). He made me a guide pamphlet and a ginger allergy card. We set off for our adventure and he immediately started off with stories of Kyoto and allowed me to get to know him better. I felt like I was traveling with a friend from Kyoto! He knew so much history and pointed out things I would have never known about. Makoon is the tour guide for you if you want to have a laid back and educational experience of Kyoto. He also gave me great tips on where to buy things ( I got a great Kimono for my mom at Chicago... read more
Dear Paige san, It's a real honor for me to receive a review like this. It was also refreshing for me to have an early bird tour, and you definitely know we were way ahead of crowds! I'm also glad you liked the pamphlet and the allergy card, Japan can be challenging in many ways for first timers. Your high school teacher story was really touching, and I'm so happy you finally came here. I'm sincerely looking forward to seeing you again with your husband! Warm Regards, Makoon
I was responsible for planning our Asia excursions so I was anxious that each tour turn out. Masaki was our jackpot! From being prompt with his emails and eager to put the perfect tour together until he escorted us back to our ship it was such a great experience! He was so entertaining... even when waiting for trains he amused us with vending machine stories. His knowledge was so impressive and he managed to convey it in such a fun way. Thank you Makoon! We are still talking about our great day in Kyoto! Also thanks for all the pictures you took ... they are awesome!!!
Dear Gabrielle san, It's truly an honor for me to receive a review like yours. In the limited time, we did quite a lot! From the port to Kyoto was a bit of trip, but thanks to you and everybody in your group, we had some great conversation, some really deep stuff about Japanese culture! Please enjoy the rest of your trip, and there are always more in Kyoto! I'm sincerely looking forward to seeing you again! Warm Regards, Masaki Makoon Mori
Masaki made our visit to Kyoto memorable. He was flexible with our itinerary, had great presentation skills and spoke fluent English. He helped us make restaurant reservations for my birthday. We enjoyed learning about the culture and history of Japan from him. If I go back to Kyoto I would hire him again.
Dear Janet san, It's an honor for me to receive your kind words. I, too enjoyed the tour especially with guests from my second home!! I really hope you and your daughter's birthday were very special in Japan. I sincerely hope to see you again, maybe next time in Vancouver or Victoria!! Warm Regards, Masaki Makoon Mori
It was my husband and mine’s first trip to Japan and it was our honeymoon. We were fortunate to have booked Makoon. From day 1, it was easy to plan our trip. Communications were clear and prompt. He was knowledgeable and friendly throughout the trip. He was respectful of us Muslims and ensured every food we tried was halal. He also suggested places to eat as well. We were able to explore Japan in 2 days and he the planning was precise. We hope to book Makoon again on our next trip.
Dear Puteri san, Once again, thank you for choosing me for your very special trip!! I really hope I could make your honeymoon a special one! It was really interesting for me to compare and contrast different religions and cultures! We did quite a lot in 2 days, but there are always more here in this ancient capital!! I really hope to see you again in the future, maybe with your child next time? Looking forward to seeing you again! Warm regards, Masaki Makoon Mori
We had a full day with Masaki. He was very knowledgeable of the history if the area and was a strong communicator. We throughly enjoyed our day with Masaki and highly recommend him. Paul
Hi Paul san, It's an honor for me to receive your generous review. We did quite a lot in your limited time, but as we talked about, there are always more in this city! Sincerely looking forward to seeing you again! Warm Regards, Masaki Makoon Mori
Makoon did an amazing job from start to finish. He was great communicating with us prior to our visit. Once we got there, he was easy to understand and showed us a great time in Kyoto. He is very knowledgeable about the history of the city and the Geisha culture. He also brought us to a fantastic Ramen spot for lunch. Anyone coming to Kyoto and looking to have a guide should book Makoon!
Dear Zack san I'd like to express my sincere appreciation to your kind words. It was great to see quite a lot of sites in one day! I really hope you like some of the photo, and it will bring back the good time you spend in Kyoto! Please enjoy the rest of your trip, and I'm sincerely looking forward to seeing you again in the future. Warm Regards, Masaki Makoon Mori
Makoon is simply THE BEST tour guide in Kyoto! We had a wonderful time with Makoon. He was amazing not only with my 10 year old daughter but also my 70 year old parents who traveled with us. We learned so much about Kyoto with our limited schedule. He was engaging, funny, kind, thoughtful and fun! We are thinking of visiting Kyoto again so that we can tour more with Makoon - that's how great he is! He is extremely organized and our tours were very well thought out and planned. We would most definitely recommend Makoon to all our family and friends.
Dear Edwina It's truly an honor for me to receive review like yours. It was great to spend time with you and your bright family, parents like your best friends and super smart daughter! I really hope my daughter will grow up like her! Even though we did a lot in limited time, but there are always more to offer in Kyoto, next time we will have even more in depth tour!! Warm Regards, Masaki Makoon Mori
made a very good preparation, nice to talk to, interesting
Masaki (Makoon san) didn't just show us Kyoto...but he showed us the behind the scenes in ways that a regular tour (or guide for that matter) never could have provided. I had 2 teenagers with me and he was great with them as they learned but remaining super engaged. Our full day itinerary was completely customized ahead of time to suit our interests - which included providing a balance of temples/history with an interest to get a deep exploration of culture, food, etc. And communicating with him ahead of time was a breeze...as he was very responsive (with outstanding English skills) and adapted according to our individual interests (down to what to eat for lunch). He exceeded all expectations. He is a Nationally Licensed Guide with a wealth of information not just about Kyoto but Jap... read more
Dear Sharon san, It's truly an honor for me to receive a review like yours. It was an great experience for me too to tour with bright teenagers with the best aunt! As you mention the day was a good mix of modern and tradition, highlights and local, I am very happy to hear you got a good sense of Kyoto in the limited time. Also all the planning phase wouldn't have been possible without your kind and prompt responses, I highly appreciate them! Even though we did a lot in your limited time, there is always more in Kyoto! I'm sincerely looking forward to meeting you again in the future. Warm Regards, Masaki Makoon Mori
My husband and I had a wonderful day in Kyoto, guided by Masaki (known as Makoon). He was very diligent in understanding our goals for the tour and put together a thoughtful and exciting tour for us. We had a lot of questions about Kyoto, Japanese culture etc - and he was very expert in giving us thoughtful and thorough answers. We left not just with an appreciation of Kyoto but also broader knowledge of the culture and history that helped us round out our trip to Japan. We would absolutely return to Kyoto and do additional tours with Makoon. We have done many private tours in our travels and we consider Makoon in the top echelon of guides we have used. Highly Highly recommended.
Dear Ramon san, I'd like to express my sincere appreciation to your generous review. We were definitely blessed with weather that day. The tour was great for me, too. You asking me questions made me learn more, too. We discussed in a wide variety of topics from work ethics, food, politics, and Hachiko! Although we did quite a lot in one day, there is always more in Kyoto. I'm sincerely looking forward to seeing you again! Warm Regards, Masaki Makoon Mori
My 16 year old and I had a great time on our tour with Masaki. He really knows so much about the history of Kyoto. While we did not expect the knowledge we were given on the tour, we were amazed and enjoyed it very much. Masaki hit every area we wanted to see, and gave us information about these areas that we would have never known had we just went on our own...not to mention been able to do so much in one day! Thanks Masaki for a great day in Kyoto. Marshall
I did a lot of research for our family trip to Japan. Makoon was very responsive and very professional from the start. I told him what I wanted to see and I asked him for recommendations on if I should change anything and he gave suggested I trade one place for Nijo castle. Being with Makoon is awesome, it's better than a documentary because you get the history and significance of the places you are visiting, the hidden spots, tips on where to eat and shop, all wrapped up in a very friendly and caring guide. We spent two half days seeing the following. 1) Fushimi Inari Shrine 2) Kiyomizu Temple 3) Sanjusangen do 4) Downtown walk (Intro to Geisha culture) 5) Bamboo Forest Arashiyama 6) Kinkaku Temple 7) Nijo Castle Our first day we were late by 20 mins because we missed our t... read more
Makoon is by far the most professional, detailed, knowledgeable and passionate guide we have ever had. He continued to amaze us with a depth of information and knowledge. We had a wonderful day exploring Kyoto guided by Makoon. His planning and attention to detail is outstanding. He adjusted the tour perfectly to accomodate my husbands health issues. I really can't say enough about this young man. It was not surprising to discover that he teaches classes for guides! Thank you Makoon for a day we will never forget!
Dear Tammie, It's more than an honor to recieve a review like yours. Once again, thank you for in depth conversation regarding Japanese and American history and culture. I too learned a lot from you, it was interesting to compare and contrast. I'm really glad you made some great memories. Even though we did a lot in one day, Kyoto always has more to offer! Sincerely looking forward to seeing you again! Warm Regards, Masaki Makoon Mori
We, a group of 4 people from Germany hired Masaki (Makoon) for a 3-days-stay in Kyoto. It was a outstanding experience to spend and share the time with him. A top-notch-guide! He has a wonderful personality, is open, flexible and understands the wishes of the group, even they deviate from the original and agreed tour plan. Makoon has a deep knowledge about the history, the temples and shrines as well as the Gijon quarter. He knows little bits and pieces that made his explanations so lively and interesting. He did care about everything we needed. We couldn't find anybody better and have not one subject to criticise other than we have been so sad when we said Good-bye end of day 3. One member of the group at home said: "It was my best vacation ever"! We do strongly recommend him and when we ... read more
Dear Chrisoph san, It's truly an honor for me to receive a review like yours. Those 3 days were quite special for me, too. I particularly enjoyed exchanging historical and cultural information between Japan and Germany. Thank you for sharing a lot of information, Germany monastery and beer, war history, and many more... I learned a lot and it was nice to see a lot of similarities. Please do tell me when you come back, even though we did a lot, there's always more in Kyoto! Sincerely looking forward to meeting you again. Warm Regards, Masaki Makoon Mori
Makoon works very hard to make a tour engaging and personalised to the things you find interesting. He is very knowledgable about Kyoto and it’s history. He also has some amazing food recommendations! We ate at several of the places he suggested and they were all great. I would recommend Makoon to anyone - he’s a lovely guy and great at his job.
Dear Aimi san, It's an honor for me to receive words like yours. I was very happy to see you enjoying Japanese history and culture. Also food is the best way to know the culture! I take a lot of time to research different restaurant from old to new. So I'm glad to hear you enjoyed all the recommended restaurants. Again, thank you for everything. Sincerely looking forward to seeing you again! Warm Regards, Masaki Makoon Mori
We had a perfect introduction to Kyoto with Masaki (Makoon) Mori as our guide. He was friendly, enthusiastic, and very considerate of us and others. His extensive knowledge of Japanese history and culture helped us get a lot more out of our visits to the various sites than we would have if we had been on our own. Makoon helped us with much more than just the tour itself. He recommended restaurants for us to enjoy in the evenings, he helped arrange train tickets for our departure from Kyoto, and he helped us plan our third day, which we spent on our own. A nice touch was the camera. Makoon took pictures of the two of us in all the neat places and sent them to us afterwards. Makoon was genuinely interested in helping us have the best visit possible to a city he clearly loves.
Dear Bryan san, I'd like to express my sincere appreciation to your wonderful review. I'm happy to hear you spend great days in Kyoto. And yes, it's always nice to have husband and wife pictures! Your words mean a lot to me. and only motivate me to get better! Looking forward to seeing you again! Warm Regards, Masaki Makoon Mori
My 14 year old son and I spent the day with Makoon in Kyoto. He was fantastic! He was punctual, knowledgeable, prepared, engaging, and kind. My son and I both connected with him and would recommend him to spend a day with anyone in Kyoto. He took pictures of us and was very informative and flexible. Super day and great memories!
Dear Kimberly san, It's an honor for me to receive a review from you! I'm great I could be a little help for you making some great memories in Kyoto. We had some real nice pictures with the perfect weather on your tour day! I have to mention your son was a real gentleman at such young age, I hope my son grows up like him. I'm sincerely looking forward to meeting you again, maybe with your family next time! Warm Regards, Masaki Makoon Mori
Makoon was by far the best tour guide we could have asked for! He was so easy to communicate with, very understanding and extremely knowledgeable. His vast knowledge of the geisha culture kept us on our toes. The 8 hours we spent with him flew by and left us wanting more. We could not stop talking about him for the rest of our trip. We had a friend use a different tour guide on a previous day and our experiences were quite different, her guide did not touch on half the information that Makoon did. He took us to sites that were so important to the history of Kyoto, that would have otherwise been overlooked. We even shed some tears at the end of the day when our time with Makoon was over. He created forever memories for us that we are forever grateful for!
Hi Katerina san, Words are not enough to express my gratitude. It was a memorable tour for me too with all the ladies. I particularly admired that everybody was eager to try different things: hand water purification, giving prayers, interesting Japanese food and many more! It was sad for me to leave you all at the end, I really hoped I could go on a Tokyo trip with you all!! I'm sincerely looking forward to meeting you all again! Warm Regards, Masaki Makoon Mori
There are tour guides and then there's Makoon! He is above and beyond personable, knowledgeable, and passionate about Kyoto and Japan. And about making that connection with what his guests hope to get out of their visit. He really shines showcasing Kyoto and his love for his work is clear. We learned and saw more in one day, in a fun way with us and our kids, than any amount of research on our own. And it was all tailored to our specific interests ranging from shrines to food to flowers to history. We are usually do-it-yourself travelers but we are so glad we spent the day with Makoon, a wonderful representative of Kyoto! And one of the highlights of an incredibly memorable trip for us.
Hi Claudia san, It's more than an honor to recieve words like yours. It was also a great day for me surprising you with the extra stop for "the last cherry blossoms" and being surprised by extraordinarily fit and knowledgeable kids! Also I was happy to see you enjoying those Soba noodles, and the fried ones! never knew they are sold in a baseball stadium.. I'm sincerely looking forward to seeing you and your family! Maybe in the US next time! Warm Regards, Masaki Makoon Mori
We had a delightful day exploring the Arashiyama area with Masaki. He is a true professional in every way. He was extremely knowledgeable of the area and helpful in planning an itinerary to complement our other activities in Kyoto. Masaki is an excellent communicator and listener. His passion is contagious, and he has a genuine interest in making your time together special. We appreciated his responsiveness and flexibility when we needed to change our meeting place. We highly recommend Masaki for others to experience the beauty of the area. Joan and Ken
We had a great day with Makoon. He had put a lot of care and thought into preparing the day for us and as a result we saw the best places in Kyoto with him. He gave us clear and interesting explanations of the places we visited on a personal basis (not all guides do that! — some just repeat a standard spiel!!) and he helped us find the best locations for some great photographs. He is clever, knowledgable and was great to talk to: we discussed all sorts of aspects of Japan and life in Japan, from social issues, to politics, to culture and so forth. And he took some great photos and sent them to us very quickly. We were sooooooooooooo pleased we chose him. Thank you Makoon!
Dear Jeremy san It's truly an honor to receive a review like yours. I'm glad I could be a help for you making some great memories here in Kyoto. It was particularly interesting for me to see quite a lot of similarities in Japanese and British culture, how people see the Queen and Emperor, cherry blossoms and many more! Also as you said, I'm happy we shared a lot of different aspects of Japan! I'm sincerely looking forward to seeing you again in the future! Warm Regards, Makoon
We had two full days with Masaki. He truly was fantastic. Games for the kids. Itinerary outlined weeks in advance. Coordinated with tour van. These were just some of the things he did for us. We could really relax and just enjoy all that Kyoto has to offer. He was outstanding in every regard and he was always upbeat and fun to be with.
Dear Todd san, Words are not enough to express my appreciation. It was great in depth yet fun tour. I'm sincerely glad kids enjoyed and learned a bit of Japanese history and culture, and for adults, we could share not only the surface history but really in depth talk such as the World War II and more. Even though we did a lot in 2 days, there are always more to do in Kyoto. I'm sincerely looking forward to seeing you in the future. Warm Regards, Masaki Makoon Mori
I can’t say enough good things! Extremely knowledgeable, amazing with kids (held their interest). All around the perfect day!!!!
Dear Amy san, Many thanks for your generous review! It was a very fun and lively group with many kids! I'm happy they participated a lot, and of course adults were very much interested in Japanese history and culture! Next time when you have more time, I'm happy to arrange a Maiko dinner!! Warm Regards, Makoon
Makoon is his nickname! He is a delight to be with for all ages. He trains many of the other guides so he knows exactly what he’s talking about. But, he is young hip and cool and even a professional break dancer. He relates to all ages beautifully. He knows about history, Japanese culture, pop culture, and current Geo politics and we use them all into the tour. English is great because he lived in Vancouver for a number of years. He doesn’t just recite facts (he said that’s what Google is for), he tells you about the Japanese educational system and about Japanese religions and philosophy and culture… He engages you in such a thoughtful way that relates to your own life. We have employed guides across the globe and Makoon might be the best ever. He is a STAR. but he books u... read more

Thank you Makoon for a wonderful tour in Kyoto! Makoon is an expert guide, a wonderful storyteller and a really special person. Makoon's easy going communications style and superb English made sure we could benefit from not only facts and sights but also from the atmosphere and unique "feel" of Kyoto. We saw and experienced things we could have never seen without the experience and thoughtful guidance by Makoon. The great passion Makoon has to guiding visitors to his great town of Kyoto and to sharing his knowledge of Japanese culture and history are immediately evident and added a unique depth to our tour. We booked a late afternoon/evening tour and full day tour the following day with Makoon to explore the many sights of Kyoto. From the beginning, the planning process and communication was great. He took our requests and developed a wonderful tour. During our short time in Kyoto, we were able to see many highlights. Makoon directed us to less congested tourist areas of the main sights and knew prime photo stops. Greatly appreciated. He took pictures of us along the way which will make for great memories. We enjoyed the history lessons and general knowledge he shared. Would highly recommend touring Kyoto with Makoon and we hope to get back to Kyoto as there is so much more to see and do. Thanks for a great time!
We spent one day in Kyoto with Makoon and it was one of the highlights of our Japan trip. He was enthusiastic and knowledgeable about the sites we visited and was open to all of our questions. We learned so much about Japanese culture and had a great time. Makoon was very responsive and polite throughout the booking process and he was able to cater the tour to our needs. He was organized when we arrived and had printed out an itinerary for each of us and even had an activity arranged for my 3 year old which was much appreciated. It's the best way for you to understand Japanese history and culture. Also, I have to respect how you planned your tour carefully for your group. I'm glad to hear I could be a bit of help. Our family of four had an amazing two days of touring Kyoto with Macoon! He brought to life the history and culture of Japan. He had incredible insights, was organized and flexible. Not only is his English excellent, (went to High School in Canada), he teaches a course to other aspiring tour guides. He was a joy to be with, professional, kind, considerate and extremely engaging. We can't recommend him highly enough. Book him now-he is in high demand and its easy to understand why!
Dear Amy It's really an honor to receive a review like yours, and this will only motivate me to improve as a guide. In your limited time, we have done a lot. From serene shrines, delicious food, zen temple, nice pictures, wild monkeys... very good mix of everything like Kyoto city itself! Thank you for listening to all the historical and cultural talks, and sharing your perspectives. I, too, learned in a great deal from you and your family. I'm sincerely looking forward to meeting you all again. Warm Regards, Masaki Makoon Mori
Makoon is one of the best guides we have ever had— in any country. He is not only knowledgeable and personable, he is well organized and fulfilled needs before we even thought of them. And it is a bonus that he carries his camera and takes great photos to document our day and as souvenirs. We will recommend him to all our friends and look forward to spending time with him again on a future trip.
Dear Shelley, It's an honor to receive a review like yours. It was great to visit a lot different sites in the limited time. I also have to appreciate you showing much respect to Japanese culture and history, it was pure fun for me to share different perspectives! Wishing you happy holidays filled with love and blessings! Warm Regards, Masaki Makoon Mori
From the moment we booked our tours with Makoon he was quick to respond back and was very professional. Makoon planned the perfect itinerary for us. Kyoto is a magical place and with Makoons knowledge we learned so much about history and culture. Makoon also recommended the most amazing places to eat and we were able enjoy Japanese cuisine.I should also mention he knew the perfect places for us to shop too. I was traveling with my 17 year old daughter and she was very interested in all of the valuable information Makoon provided. Makoon is such a kind individual we felt like we had known him for awhile. My wife and I were visiting Kyoto for the first time and engaged Masaki’s services as a guide for three days. He was very helpful during the planning phase. Letting us know certain sites we should see and helping to organize our days to minimize travel and maximize our site seeing. He kept us up to date on events prior to our arrival, especially important since we were we going to Kyoto close to Typhoon season. During our tours he was very knowledgeable and provide us with the right combination of historical facts and local trivia. Most of all he was flexible. My hobby is photography and he was able to identify key places where I could get good pictures. In addition, he tailored the days factoring in our preference for walking and time of day and weather. Although it was just a day with Makoon, it seemed like we have captured Kyoto at its finest. With a background of living and studying aboard, Makoon speaks English fluently. He has a very pleasant personality therefore we connected very well like we have known each other for a long time. My 20 years old daughter and 16 years old son enjoyed talking to Makoon and shared a lot of interested subjects. From planning to executing our tour, Makoon was very professional, attentive and flexible. He returned emails very promptly when we have questions. He always gave us candid feedback and suggestion. What an amazing experience! Such a fantastic itinerary made up to suit our group (which included kids). Makoon was a kind and generous guide. We learned so much about Kyoto, Japan and Shinto during our day and we managed to fit in so much in a day. Highly recommended. An excellent guide who was a foodie to boot which suited our group perfectly! Thanks for a super time Makoon!

We were staying in Tokyo, and as we only had a day in Kyoto we wanted to see the highlights of the city. Makoon was a great asset to accomplish this goal. We arrived slightly later than initially agreed upon due to train issues, but Makoon was able to keep us on schedule. His English is perfect and he was a pleasure to speak with. We saw all the sites we wanted to and more. I would highly recommend Makoon to anyone wanting an in depth look at Kyoto from an experienced local.
Dear Marc, Words are not enough for me to express my gratitude to your knid review! I'm happy to hear that you achieved your goal in your limited time. I'm sure you now know Kyoto is a lot different from Tokyo, or any other cities in Japan! It was an extremely hot day, but you all enjoyed the good 8 hour tour thoroughly! I'm sincerely looking forward to seeing you and your family again in the future! Warm Regards, Masaki Makoon Mori
Couldn't have had a better guide to navigate our experience through Kyoto. Makoon will make your experience unforgettable and his knowledge of the sites enhanced our time tremendously. We left with a better understanding of the culture and traditions of Kyoto and he even took some of the best pictures we will treasure forever. Makoon deserves 10 stars! Stop looking and book him now.
Dear Mike-san I can't appreciate enough for your great and such a quick review! I'm glad you liked some of the pictures, I know it's actually a rare occasion for you to have picture together (except selfies!). You both were very much respectful toward the different culture, and share some great insights about this country! I also learned a lot from your positive attitude! I'm fortunate to have a chance to show the city around for great guests like you! Sincerely looking forward to seeing you again in the future! Warm Regards, Masaki Makoon Mori
We spent two excellent days with Masaki (Makoon) seeing the highlights of Kyoto during a very hot July heat wave! He is very organised, speaks good English and you'll find him easy to understand and good company. He also arranged lunch both days to suit our dietary requirements - first day we had a 'tofu lunch' in a traditional restaurant which was very interesting, second day we had a noodle/pancake meal in the Gion district. Makoon knows all the places to visit in Kyoto and comes highly recommended. Our highlight was walking around Gion and getting an understanding of the geiko & meiko heritage - we were lucky to see a meiko on her day off. Makoon also takes great photos which is nice if you're a couple travelling together.
Dear Lyall, I'd like to express my appreciation to your kind review. It was a very hot day indeed, but still a great time especially in the main weekend of the Gion Festival! It makes me really happy to hear you especially enjoyed the culture of Maiko and Geiko, understanding their lifestyles are one of the interesting parts of Kyoto definitely! Thank you for enjoying the local food, too. I'm glad you enjoyed the experience and the flavor! Please enjoy the photos and remember the great time you spent in Kyoto! Warm Regards, Masaki Makoon Mori
We had a wonderful day exploring Kyoto with Masaki as our guide. He speaks english well and is very knowledgeable about the history of Kyoto and the sites that we visited. It was wonderful to see Kyoto at our own pace on a private tour tailored to our interests. Masaki is a fun and energetic guide and I would highly recommend him.
I need to give 10 stars as five is not enough. Masaki Makoon spent two days safely and proudly shepherding us around some of the most fascinating jewels of his beautiful city, Kyoto. One day in the city, one day in nature. The pace he set was perfect and he cared for our wellbeing and spirits in the high temperature. I can not recommend this knowledgeable, professional and charming person highly enough as a guide! We learned so much, and felt a connection with not just the surface beauty of the places we visited, but with the underlying history and their unique energy. We also had delicious food, found wonderful gifts, and enjoyed his company. I can’t wait to return to Kyoto again. My recommendation is to let him set the agenda, and take at least two days. Have fun!
Dear Jane It's truely an honor for me to receive a review like this. I, too, enjoyed guiding you in a great deal becauase I could see you were really enjoying each place we visited. I'd also like to express my appreciation for you taking time to listen to all the hisotric and cultural information, that's a big respect. It was also great to hear about your story and insight about Japan, and also an opinion as an entrepreneur. That was very much inspiratoinal. I really hope to see you again in the future. Till then, please take care! Warm Regards, Masaki Makoon Mori
Our family has been using guides for at least 6 years visiting cities in Europe and Asia. I selected Makoon for 2 reasons. 1) His excellent reviews 2) His breakdancing background (my teenage son's are dancers too and I knew he would get along with my sons if he was also a dancer) I have to admit his rate was the highest of any of the guides we booked in Japan but I just had a feeling he would be worth it and I was right. Makoon was worth every penny ! He helped ensure that our schedules were not too ambitious, was very mindful of the weather in Kyoto which would affect how many sites we could see and was very flexible in choosing lunch locations for us as we had already been in Japan for a week before getting to Kyoto. This was all during our planning conversations. Once we met, Makoon... read more

Again, I'd like to express my sincere appreciation for choosing and spending time with me. Looking forward to seeing you all again! Warm Regards, Masaki Makoon Mori
During our recent visit to Kyoto with our friends we were lucky enough to work with Masaki-san as our Super Tour Guide. I say Super because his knowledge of both the factual details of the sites we visited, but of equal importance to us was his knowledge of how these 500-1,000 year old sites continue to fit into Japan’s current/modern culture today. Masaki-san is also a very good photographer and having his great photos to remember our visit by is outstanding. We could not recommend more highly working with Masaki-san if you want an in-depth and well organized tour of Kyoto.
Dear Chris It's truely an honor for me to receive a review like yours. It was great that we shared a lot of information and also our insights. I think our tour was not only pure fun but also very much meaningful. Thank you for enjoying the photos, too. I am really looking forward to seeing you again! Till next time. Warm Regards, Masaki Makoon Mori
We are a family of four with two girls, ages 11 and 15. We spent two days in Kyoto with Masaki (Makoon). Makoon was wonderful. He planned an excellent itinerary for two days that included a mix of shrines and temples with some active and interesting activities for the girls, including a trip to Monkey Mountain. Makoon is very knowledgeable about Japanese culture and the history of all of the important sites. He delivers this information in a very effective way that enhances the visits to the amazing places. He also picked out some wonderful restaurants for my husband, who is a major foodie, that we definitely would not have found on our own. We also had some great discussions about Japanese culture and life generally! We would highly recommend Makoon as a guide to anyone travelling... read more

Warm Regards, Masaki Makoon Mori
Our family had the most wonderful day touring Kyoto with Makoon. We’ve toured many cities in Asia and Europe with a private guide, and Makoon was one of the best tour guides we’ve ever had. Makoon created an itinerary that was perfect for our family (kids’ ages 15, 13, and 10), and he shared really interesting facts and historical context that made the sites so much more enjoyable to visit. Makoon is very thoughtful, attentive, and kind, and it was a pleasure to spend the day with him. We will definitely recommend him to our family and friends.
Dear Eriko-san It's truely an honor to hear words like these. I'm really glad I could share a bit of Kyoto history and culture with your family. Once again, I have to mention how smart and interested your kids are in such young age! I think everybody was especially curious about the fascinating Geiko & Maiko culture! Please enjoy those pictures, and remember the great time you spent in Kyoto sometimes! Sincerely hoping to see you again in the future!! Warm Regards, Makoon
Makoon was a truly wonderful tour guide! He was very knowledgeable about everything we did and saw, and was flexible to include the sights we want to visit in Kyoto. He was engaging, friendly, very enthusiastic about our tour, and he spoke English very well. He was also very understanding and accommodating about our numerous dietary restrictions. His tour was one of the highlights of our trip to Japan and I would highly recommend him!
Dear Scott I'd like to express my sincere appreciation to your kind review. It's great to know I could support your limited time in Kyoto. The traffic was surprisingly good that day, that was a bonus! It was really interesting for me to hear about New York and hear about different perspective about Japanese history and culture. I sincerely hope to see you again. Warm Regards, Makoon
Two outstanding days in Kyoto with Makoon (Masaki)! We were a family of 6 -- 2 adults, 3 teenagers, and one six-year-old. Makoon took some ideas we gave him in advance and created a customized 2-day itinerary to hit everything and more. He developed a little sticker game for the little one to play, and adjusted his speed and topics so that all the kids stayed interested. He was very patient at adjusting to our pace, answering questions, and keeping us all together. The first day included a bunch of traditional and modern sites in the city with lots of great food stops along the way. A highlight was the Mieko/Geiko district where Makoon has a deep knowledge of culture and traditions -- one of the highlights of the trip. The second day included nature and the countryside which the kid... read more
Dear Brian It's an honor for me to receive such positive words! I'm glad that your children were interested in Japanese culture, especially about Gion! Again, I'd like to appreciate you letting me spend time for 2 days. Looking forward to meeting you again in the future! Best Regards, Masaki Makoon Mori
If you are looking for a private tour guide, Masaki ("Makoon") is a must hire. From the moment we met him, it felt like we were friends for a long time. He helped coordinate our tour via email and it was a good mix of sightseeing, food and shopping. He is also very passionate and knowledgeable about the history of Kyoto so we learned a lot. We thoroughly enjoyed the day and I would definitely recommend him to all my friends as well as use him again. Thank you Makoon, we had a great time.

Masaki aka Makoon was the absolute best! After 5 minutes together, my wife and myself felt like we were with a friend we had known for many years! Not only is he a wonderful person, he was an amazing guide! The day spent with Makoon was the highlight of our visit to Kyoto! He customized everything about the day from places we visited to the food we ate. My only regret is we only had one day to spend with Masaki! I recommend you book your time with him ASAP when visiting Kyoto!

Our son and daughter in law went to Japan on their honeymoon, loved their trip, told us we had to go, and Kyoto was a must see. We could not have selected a better guide for our tour of Kyoto than Makoon. We have had many tours all over the world and he is one of the best guides ever! He not only tailored the day to our requests but also added extra stops based on comments during the day. Makoon was organized, very knowledgeable about the history of Kyoto and passionate about sharing that history and his love of the city. We would highly recommend Makoon to anyone for a fascinating tour of Kyoto.
Dear Angela Many thanks for your generous review. It's such an honor to read this especially from an experienced traveler like you. Thank you for teaching me about photography! Sincerely hope to meet you again. Warm Regards Masaki Makoon Mori
Masaki was excellent as a guide. He was very well organized, knowledgeable, prepared, mixed history and contemporary understandings of places we visited. He was flexible and able to change our schedule when we asked him to. He is personable, witty, smart, and courteous. We cannot think of a better tour guide than Masaki. He was totally superior!
Dear Steven I'd like to express my sincere appreciation to your kind review. It was also great for me to go on a trip with a professor of world religion. I learned a lot from you about the temple symbol and Aryens and many more. I sincerely hope to see you again! Warm Regards, Masaki Makoon Mori
You have to book Masaki as your tour guide in Kyoto. He’s the BEST! My husband and I traveled from California to Japan for the first time ever and we knew we wanted the FULL experience. Kyoto was a must see, as it combines modern Japan with the history of Japan. Booking Masaki as our tour guide was the best decision we made! He was full of information and he customized our tour based on our personal likes. We are an adventurous couple who love the outdoors. Masaki took us to ALL the rights spots that fit that description. We went to the Bamboo Forest, Monkey Mountain, Fushimi Inari Shrine and Nijo Castle. We even took a quick detour to McDonalds because we wanted to test the food to see how close it was to an American McDonalds. For our real lunch we went to a local spot for a bowl of deli... read more
Dear Christiana It's an honor for me to recieve a review like this. You are definitely one of the most adventurous and coolest guests I've met. It was a full package tour with history, modern, culture, nature, animal, and food.. However, it felt very short as you enjoy each place to the fullest! Having Teriyaki burger during the tour was special for me, too! I sincerely hope to see you again in the future. Warm Regards Masaki Makoon Mori
We spent 3 great days with Makoon in Kyoto. I could tell from the initial email that he was a person that paid attention to detail and his clients’ interests. My partner has a serious fish and seafood allergy. Makoon arranged every lunch and dinner in advance so we could enjoy Japanese cuisine with no worries. The days were spent with a great combination of history, sightseeing, shopping (as requested), and conversations about Japanese culture.
Dear John Thank you for your kind review. I'm really glad you could enjoy different Japanese food, food is very important to fully enjoy a trip. It was also great you asked various cultural questions, hope this trip impacted your perception to Japan in a positive way. I also have to mention I appreciate dogwoods and structural space frame more now! Finally, I sincerely hope to see you again. Maybe in Seattle next time! Warm Regards Makoon

Please enjoy the pictures sometimes and remember the time you spent in Kyoto! Warm Regards, Masaki Makoon Mori
We had an amazing time with Makoon. From the first encounter email to the minute we we said goodbye-He was so humble, interesting, accommodating, patient-I just cant say enough great things about our experience. He made our trip super special and memorable by being so accessible and also by doing some extra things like selecting a surprise place to see, by explaining Japanese Culture from an insider's view and by bringing his camera and taking some pretty great photos of us and sending them along. We will definitely recommend him to family and friends if they plan a trip to japan in the future.
Dear Karen Thank you very much for your kind review. I also had an amazing time with you! It was great sitting down by the quiet rock garden sharing our thoughts. You were fun and intellectual. We were incredibly fortunate to have Makoon as our guide for our two days in Kyoto. He was truly perfect in every sense. Very knowledgeable, very patient, created an agenda based upon our particular interests, and was always flexible. He brought us to areas off the beaten path that were so special and memorable. He picked out the best places for lunch each day. He made this trip truly outstanding. Thank you Makoon-san for being such a great guide - much appreciation.
Dear Mike It's truely an honor for to recieve a review like yours. Thank you again for letting me share the history and culture of my country, and thank you for sharing a lot of history and culture in Hawaii. It was really interesting to see a lot of similarities in 2 different cultures. You really made me to go to visit Hawaii, and I'm quite confident I will visit your island one day! Thank you again Mike-san for sharing a great time! Warm Regards, Makoon
I think I'm lucky that I had Makoon as my guide in Kyoto. He is very polite, thoughtful and has a great attitude. He has an in-depth knowledge of the sight we visited and he also told me pretty much about Japanese culture and way of life. I particularly enjoyed ancient tales which were easy to believe in this spiritual and magical city. I can not recommend him as a guide highly enough. Thank you very much Makoon! Riitta from Finland
Dear Riitta I'd like to sincerely appreciate your kind review. I'm always happy to accomodate a guest like you, who is very respectful to different culture and intereseted in the unique culture. Hope you really enjoyed the Kaiseki meal, and the Noh performance. The cherry blossoms were great, but I really would like you to come for the automn leaves next time! Thank YOU very much Riitta! Warm Regards, Makoon
Masaki (Makoon) is an excellent guide. His historical & cultural knowledge of the areas visited is unsurpassed. He is very caring, ensuring our safety, comfort and enjoyment all the time. I would recommend Makoon anytime you visit Japan.
Dear Marianne I'd like to express my sincere appreciation to your review. Thank you for mentioning about the safety. It's the number one thing to make sure during the tour, and nowadays as you saw, Kyoto is really busy everywhere. I was happy that you felt the tour was safe and confortable. I was also happy you enjoyed the cherry blossoms, but as I mentioned, each season is very different in Kyoto. I really hope you are going to come back to Japan again! Warm Regards, Makoon
Masaki (Makoon) is a fantastic guide . His knowledge is very extensive and his English is excellent. We had a full 8 hrs with him and advice to start early to be ahead of the crowds showed his enthusiasm to make our day perfect. We had a fun day and everything he organised was spot on . I would highly recommend Makoon to guide you fora perfect day in Kyoto
Dear Liz It's an honor for me to receive such review. I had great time with all of you, and was really happy you all showed a lot of interest in Japanese history and culture. And I have to mention the day was extra great with the full bloom of cherry blossoms!! I do try my best for my guests to have a great memory in Kyoto, and when I receive a review like yours, it's all worthwhile!! Looking forward to seeing you again in the future!! Warm Regards, Masaki Makoon Mori
My wife, son and I took a trip to Japan with a stop off in Kyoto and we hired Makoon to take us around town. What an amazing guide! We gave him a list of what our family likes to do and he created an itinerary just for us that covered the highlights of the city. We only had a short period of time with him, but he really gave us a flavor of Kyoto. He even took us to some Shrines that were off the beaten path, but were just as beautiful (if not more so) as the popular attractions. He also knew how to keep our 10-year old son engaged by creating a treasury hunt. The knowledge he shared really helped us to understand the history of Kyoto. If anyone ever asks me for recommendations about visiting the city, hiring Makoon would be the first suggestion I have!
After trawling through all the guide profiles on Triplelights, I decided on Makoon. I was looking for a guide active enough to keep up with me, and not too serious and stodgy. I am so glad I picked Makoon! He is funny, charming and kind and a very interesting person to talk to. he has extensive knowledge of Kyoto and its sites and gave me little snippets of information not found in guide books. Leading up to my trip to Kyoto, Makoon sent me several emails to ask me about my interests, tastes etc, so that he could tailor the tour for me. He even took the time to book us into a very exclusive hard to book restaurant (apparently THE hardest to book restaurant in Kyoto). I believe he said he tried calling more than 100 times to get a reservation! I cannot be more grateful for that experie... read more
Dear Jill-san I'd like to express my sincere appreciation to your kind review. Your insight, respect, and the interest to Japanese culture made my day! You are an exellent experienced traveler. Also, I have to mention that the Kaiseki restaurant experience was definitely native to Kyoto, and you can't experience it anywhere else in the world. It indeed was the hardest restaurant to make a reservation, but it's all worthwile witnessing you having a great experience! Thank you for sharing a great time with me, I will make sure I will try a kickboxing lesson!! See you next year!! Warm Regards, Makoon
Makoon was absolutely the best tour guide that we ever experienced. His English was perfect and he was extremely knowledgeable regarding places in Kyoto and is constantly doing research to add to his knowledge base. He also made sure that we were completely satisfied with his tour. Thanks for all the photos!
Dear Gail It's an honor for me to receive your review! The tour with you was very pleasant for me as I could see you were truely enjoying each site, and also you show respect and interest to Japanese history and culture. Once again, congratulations for your grandson! He will definitely enjoy that Kimono from his grandparents!! I will keep studying so I can show your family around again, and that time, I will share a lot of new information! Warm Regards, Masaki Makoon Mori
How did I get so lucky to have Masaki as my guide for a day in Kyoto? Five stars is not enough. Masaki is the utmost professional, and knew details about everything. Absolutely perfect English and a great communicator/teacher about the history and the culture of Kyoto and all of it's sites. If Masaki has an open day in his schedule, it would be best to book it fast. He is the best!
Dear Tom, I sincerely appreciate your kind review. It was great showing you around this ancient capital. I'm really glad that I could help you visit as many sites as possible in your limited time. In addition, I have to mention that your respect and interest to Japanese history and culture really made my day! Really hope to see you again in the near future, maybe with you family next time! Warm Regards, Masaki Makoon Mori
We had only a day and a half to see Kyoto and Makoon did a great job of selecting sites that were interesting to our whole family, including our 7 year old. Highlights of our tour included Monkey Mountain, the Bamboo Forest, Shogun mound and my personal favorite Fushimi Inari Shine. Makoon is very knowledgeable of the history of Kyoto and the sites we visited, his insights made our experience more memorable than if we'd just visited the sites on our own. He also brought along his camera and took some really great photos for us. We had the unique experience of touring Kyoto during a rare snow storm. Makoon did a great job of modifying our original planned itinerary to allow us to still enjoy all the sites even with the wet weather. If you are looking to tour Kyoto, we highly reco... read more
I'd like to sincerely appreciate your kind review. I'm happy to hear the tour worked out well. It was really cold but as you mentioned, a lot of places looked extra beautiful with snow, and throwing snow balls are just great for kids! I hope you will sometimes look at these pictures and remember the great time you and your family spent in this ancient capital. Looking forward to meeting you again! Warm Regards, Masaki Makoon Mori
From the very beginning, it was a great match! Touring with Makoon, we saw the perfect mix between traditional culture, typical of Kyoto and the lesser known off-the-beaten path spots. He picked up quickly on our family dynamics and tailored our tour on the fly. A wealth of information, Makoon always knew the best photo spots, authentic shops, and one of a kind restaurants. It would be a mistake not to tour with Makoon!
Dear Diane It's truely an honor to hear words like these. You all were great, fun, and VERY insightful. I learned very much from your insight toward Japanese culture, especially Lane's comment about having a different perspective at Ryoanji, and Greg's understanding of the architecture at Kiyomizu temple. I was so happy to see Lane fell in love with the Kimono. I respect you were always taking care of hotels, tickets, and everything for your family. I know it's not an easy thing to do! Again, I sincerely appreciate for choosing me! I'm really glad to meet you and your family. Looking forward to meeting you all again. Masaki Makoon Mori
Makoon is seriously amazing! We spent 7 days in Japan and had 3 tour guides, 2 in Kyoto and 1 in Tokyo. The only reason we had 2 guides in Kyoto is because we booked our guides only a few weeks out and Makoon was only available for one day of our trip. We are from the US and had never been to Japan (or even Asia!) before. All three guides we had in Japan were excellent, but Makoon was amazing!! I never write reviews, but felt compelled to write this one. Here are the reasons I feel Makoon made our trip most memorable. 1) He developed a wonderful rapport with our 15 year old son right away - they got along famously the whole time and he kept the day entertaining for both my son and me and my husband. 2) his knowledge of Shintoism (sp?), Buddhism, Kyoto and Japan history is incredible... read more
Dear Elizabeth It is truely my honor to recieve a review like this. I sincerely appreciate you took time to write this kind review. I hope I could have been a help for you to have a great impression of Japan and Kyoto. You were all great guests, very interested, and fit! I was especially amazed by your son who is very insightful and curious, but at the same time have understanding toward the totally different culture and history of Japan. Again, thank you for enjoying the tour so much. I honestly hope to see you again. Warm Regards, Masaki Makoon Mori
Masaki, or “Makoon” as he goes by, was an exceptional tour guide. I can’t say enough good things about him! We booked a pricate custom one day tour of Kyoto. He was always quick and prompt with email correspondence prior to our trip. He took into consideration my ideas and places I wanted to see while coming up with a great itinerary and suggesting his own ideas. He is very knowledgeable; he knew so much about all of the different places he took us and his English was excellent. If you’re looking to go places off the beaten path, Makoon is your guy! Most of the temples and shrines and the bamboo forest he suggested were so quiet, it was like we had the place to ourselves. He also knew what time we should go for lunch to avoid the rush. He went above and beyond to help make our trip as good... read more
Dear Danielle Words are not enough to express my appreciation to your kind review. I am really glad that you enjoyed a tour, and happy that I could be a help for you to make a great memory here in the ancient capital. Yes, highlights and off the beaten path sites were both great. Please enjoy the picture, hope it will remind you the great time spent in Kyoto! Hope to see you again, please take care. Warm Regards, Makoon
Mr Masaki, a.k.a Mr Makoon is the first guide i have encountered who brings a camera and becomes your personal photographer too. He is very informative, accomodating and knowledgable. He would even find shortcuts to let u have a better photo angle of the sites you go to. He wilk even make a personalized ITenerary brochure for you ?. thumbs up
Dear Robert I sincerely appreciate your kind review. I'm glad you liked my photo service! Even though I'm not a professional or anything, I have been studying to take a nice photo at a nice unordinary spots. Hope it helped for you and your family to make a great memory here in Kyoto. Thank you for telling me a lot of culture in Philippines, I'm looking forward to actually seeing what you told me. Please take care of yourself. Warm Regards, Makoon
Makoon (Masaki) took my family and i around Kyoto for a day. He quickly adapted to our style, and spent just the right amount of time explaining history/culture, without getting detailed to the point of boredom. He was lots of fun, and flexible, in that we added an extra stop to the tour. I would heartily recommend Masaki
Dear Sam, I sincerely appreciate your kind review. It was great to get connected with your friendly family. I was happy you showed a lot interest in Japanese culture and Sake! It was all worthwhile when I see you enjoyed the extra stop at the Sake brewery, and hope you enjoyed Yamazaki the next day. Once again, thank you very much for choosing me and I really hope I will see you again in the future! Happy New Year Masaki Makoon Mori
On our first morning in Kyoto, we had Masaki guide us around the Arashiyama area where we experienced the bamboo grove, monkey mountain and great traditional food and shopping. It was a really enjoyable half day tour for our family and Masaki was fantastic. His knowledge of traditional and contemporary Japanese culture was first rate. He connected easily with the whole family. He was able to get us in and out of the various places avoiding the busiest times while being at the right places at the right times to see the highlights. And to top it off ... he took us to a local Ramem lunch spot which was the best meal we had on our entire trip to Japan. Thank you Masaki for such a memorable experience!!
Dear Steve I sincerely appreciate your review. It's really an honor to recieve a review like this. Yes, the traditional Arashiyama is always a great vacation place, but has to know the good timing! I'm really glad you enjoyed the Kyoto style ramen! No wonder the store is around for nearly 50 years. I'm looking forward a day to have a trip with my son like you did with your family!! Looking forward to seeing you and your family again! Best Regards, Makoon
Very much enjoyed seeing the monkey park, alternative uncrowded bamboo Forrest, and special temples and shrines with Masaki. He took us to places the big busses couldn't go to and is very knowledgeable about Kyoto.
Dear Monique Thank you very much again for choosing me. It's an honor to recieve a review from you! I will keep on studying so I can show you more next time you come back! Please take care and hope to see you again! Masaki Makoon Mori
Just returned to Hawaii from a quick trip to Japan which included 2 days in Kyoto. First, if you're thinking about taking a relaxing trip to Kyoto avoid the Thanksgiving weekend! It's already peak season to visit Kyoto to witness the changing colors for autumn, but what is Thanksgiving day in the US is also a national holiday in Japan. Everything and everywhere was crowded with local and foreign tourists. Talking Saturday night Las Vegas strip crowds and Disneyland Main Street after the fireworks crowded sidewalks! Did not see that coming so didn't plan for that! Fortunately, we had Masaki as our tour guide and he did plan for it! Masaki or "Makoon" which is his nickname, was EXCEPTIONAL. He anticipated the crowds and had it programmed into his itinerary for the day. He had us st... read more
I sincerely appreciate your review. It's great to hear your are back in the warm island safe and sound! Yes, it was one of the peak times of the year, but I'm glad we could somehow avoid all the crowds. I'm really happy you give me the compliments about the details I always work on. It's all worthwhile when I get a review like yours. Please come back again I have a lot more to show you, maybe when it's a little bit warmer!! Really looking forward to meeting you again. Warm Regards, Masaki Makoon Mori
The tour was well planned and tailored for me and my mom. Makoon was very clear and effective with his communication skills, knowlegeable about Japan's history (I like that the tour was interactive) he's fun, personable , sensitive to your needs and made suggestions to help us maximize time to cover the highlights of our tour. I like the fact that he made sure we avoided the massive crowds as it is now the peak of travel here in Japan. Lastly, he made sure we got back to our hotel safely after the tour by accompanying us back to the hotel with his own time. This is taking an extra mile and I think it's above and beyond. "Hi Makoon, Thanks for the local food suggestions, local tips for shopping and peace and quiet sightseeing". We had a great time and experience.
I sincerely appreciate your kind review. Also I have to mention that you treated me like your family member, and it's my honor. I learned a lot about photo taking from you, I was really happy to take you to very local temple with thousands of statues of Jizo! Even though it was the peak time, the tour went smoothly with your support! I'm really looking forward to seeing you again in the future. Please enjoy the rest of your trip! Kind Regards, Masaki Mkoon Mori
I have travelled to many places but never had a guide impress me more. First of all, I appreciate his communications prior to my travel providing me insight on the weather conditions, cash requirements needed to enter the sites, and his flexibility in planning an itinerary of my favorite sites to visit. On the day of our tour, he provided excellent directions of where we would meet at Kyoto Station and upon meeting him his friendly demeanor let me know I was going to have a great tour. He created for me a brochure with our day’s plans with time and even some of the history of the places we were to visit which was great to have. Masaki had so much background knowledge on the sites that we visited that made it more personal instead of boring see the sites. He made the history come alive in ... read more
It's truely my honor to receive a review like yours. You are a really insightful, and I too learned a lot by guiding you. I sincerely hope I could be a help for you to make a great memory. Please enjoy the photos and remember the trip sometimes! Warm Regards Masaki Makoon Mori
"Makoon" is an easy going very friendly guide. He made us very comfortable and we felt like he was our good friend whom we have not seen for a long time. He provided a clear itinerary of our tour of west side of Kyoto. But it was very flexible in changing. Loads of suggestions that helped us decide what we wanted to do, what we should see, what and where to buy. Never once he pushed or hurried us up. He also took us to a very good tasty local Kyoto ramen restaurant that is outside of the touristy areas, which we would never have known. My friend and I had a fantastic time. We would definitely get him as our guide and also recommend to all our friends!
I really appreciate your kind review. It is truely my honor to recieve words like yours. You were very friendly guests with full of knowledge! I learned a lot from you two, especially about photography! Also thank you for appreciating the local flavor, next time I'll make sure you enjoy super spicy ramen, and we'll sweat a lot together! Please enjoy the rest of your trip! Warm Regards, Masaki Makoon Mori
I cannot say enough good things about Makoon. He is the best! He responds quickly, he is flexible, knowledgeable, kind and great with kids!! Our tour with him was definitely the best part of our trip. If we are ever back in Kyoto he will be the first person we call. Thank you Makoon!!
I can't thank enough for a kind review like yours. I'm sincerely glad that I could be a help for your family to make a great memory here in Kyoto! I loved how everyone in your family has so much energy, especially kids! Have a great time with the rest of your trip, and I'm looking forward to listening to your concert in the future. Warm Regards, Masaki Makoon Mori
We were glad to have engaged his service, and he had make it a memorable one and we had requested for his contact to our friends who are intending to go there hassle free.
Dear Priscillia-san, Thank you very much for your kind review. I'm happy that you liked my service and made a great memory in this ancient capital! You all were eager to try different food and learn about the culture, which made me feel my job is worthwhile! Thank you for requesting my contact for your friends, I'll make sure they make a great memory here just like your family did! Warm Regards, Masaki Makoon Mori
Makoon opened our eyes, ears, hearts and souls to the beauty of Kyoto. While our visit was short, our experience was infinite as we will carry these memories for the rest of our lives. Makoon is a teacher more than a guide and we highly recommend him to future Kyoto visitors. It will take too long to describe all that we did and learned, so I will say that this visit gave us a thirst to return one day and to tell our friends and family to visit this beautiful city. Thank you again Makoon for all your services!
Dear Michael I really appreciate your kind review. Thank you so much for choosing me as a guide on your short stay in Kyoto. It makes me really happy to connect with guests like you who appreciate different culture. It was amazing that we start off tour encountering Maiko and ended the tour with another Maiko, what a perfect start and end!! As I mentioned in the tour, there are so much more we can do in Kyoto, even though we did a lot of things in 2 days! I'm looking forward to see you again in the future! Have a safe trip home! Best Regards. Masaki Makoon Mori
Masaki or Makoon (as he likes to be known) was the perfect guide for our family of first timers to Kyoto. His knowledge and passion for his town are infectious and we learnt so much. We contacted Makoon with how we wanted our day to look and he catered perfectly! We wanted a bit of the old and the new and to also see things from a locals point of view - all perfect! Not only is Makoon a great guide, he's a great guy too! We thoroughly recommend him for Kyoto visits! Thanks
Dear Scott Thank you very much for your kind review! It's my pleasure to see you make a great memory in Kyoto. I was really happy that every one of your family is very eager to learn about Japanese culture, and enjoyed each site to the fullest! I'm looking forward to seeing everybody again in the near future! Warm Regards, Makoon
Makoon can take a simple tour of a temple and makes it feel like the movie Night at the Museum. A real life visualization of history from the story telling mind of Makoon! The perfect understanding of what is just the right amount of knowledge to pass on without making it boring or too technical. Detail orientated, flexible and caring, Makoon was more than a tour guide, he became our friend. Thank you for a great day in Kyoto.
Dear James, Thank you very much for your kind review! It is truely my honor to hear the compliment about my guiding/explanation. You all were great guests, interested, active, and got sense of humor! Again, thank you very much for everything, I really hope to see you again in the future! Best Regards, Masaki Makoon Mori
Masaki was in one word excellent! He was knowledgeable - knew how to maximize time and avoid crowds. He customized our trip. We quickly took his advice not to try to bucket list Kyota and see everything in a day - what sage advice. Sure, it can be done but you will miss out on the true atmosphere/energy of the sites you visit. We had thought about staying on the east side but Masaki knew that one of the temples we wanted to see was going to be under construction (something not found on any website - until after we got there) Great job!! We stayed west and the golden temple, Zen rock garden and the bamboo forest area were wonderful. We are good walkers/hikers and never felt rushed or tired. The highlight was the restaurant that Masaki picked for lunch. An unbelievable meal. We ... read more
Dear Pete I'd like to sincerely appreciate for such a kind review. It is truely my honor to receive this kind of review. As you mentioned, Kyoto is an incredible city, but one struggle especially nowaday is huge crowds. I was happy we could avoid them and enjoyed each place fully. Also I have to mention that I was really happy to have guests like you who ask historical and cultural quetions and share your own insight about them. Regarding the lunch, without any hesitation, it is one of the best restaurants in Kyoto. Again, I'm glad you experienced the aethetic of Japanese cuisine! I can keep going, but I'd like to appreciate once again you being great guests! Really looking forward to meeting you again! Kind Regards, Masaki Makoon Mori
We are first time visitors with family of 4. Makoon thoughtfully planned 1.5 days of itineraries that satisfied each of our interests. He was very flexible and accommodating. We enjoyed his narrations of the history for each destination. He even made us daily personalized brochures that included our schedule and fun facts about each location. Wow! We felt special!!! This made our tour so much more interesting. His English was top notch. In terms of food, he took us to a variety of different places where the locals go. Not touristy at all. We loved loved all the food! Makoon was thoughtful, charming, and so much fun to be with. Most of all, he was kind and genuine. Don't tour Kyoto with any other guide. Makoon is THE guide for you!!!
Dear Joni, Khelin, Cassidy, and Will Thank you very much for your kind review. It is truely my honor to receive words like these. I also had a lot of fun showing your family around the city. Even though it was super hot and humid day, you guys were all very fit and walked nice and strong!! I appreciate you were all interested in Japanese culture, asked a lot of different questions, and shared your insight. I, too, learned a lot from guiding you all. Once again, thank YOU very much for the great day. Really hope to see everybody again in the future. Warm Regards, Masaki Makoon Mori
We were lucky to be able to book Makoon the day before our tour. He e-mailed us asking for our preferences for the tour and for lunch and he made all of the necessary arrangements. He even provided a personalized brochure/itinerary for the tour. He arrived at our hotel early and off we went to see Kiyomizu Temple, Gion including Pontocho, and the Fushimi Inari Shrine. We were even able to see a Geiko and Maiko! We stopped for lunch in-between at an excellent Yakitori restaurant he had booked ahead of time. He was nice enough to take us to a supermarket looking for a certain kind of candy. Having his car for the tour provided a great deal of flexibility. It was nice to get his cultural insights and learn details about each site we would not have otherwise known. His english is outs... read more
I'd like to appreciate your kind review. It is truly an honor. It was very lucky we encountered Geiko and Maiko such early time! I was really happy to see you enjoyed father-and-son time, and both of you were really interested in Japanese history and culture! I hope your son will like that candy, and green tea kitkat! It was hot but beautiful day, the perfect day for a nice picture! Some pictured had excellent color! I could keep going and going.. Anyway, I'm really looking forward to seeing you and Blake, and other family members of yours! Please take care, and see you soon! Kind Regards, Masaki Makoon Mori
we had an outstanding day with makoon! we traveled very efficiently to all the different sites in kyoto by car with our family of 4. this was quite fortunate as the day was very hot and humid. at the sites and during our car rides, makoon had plenty of historical and interesting information to share with us. we gained a deeper insight of japanese history and culture with makoon's comments and anecdotes. my 2 teenagers were also very engaged and enjoyed the tour also. we all HIGHLY recommend makoon. he will definitely enrich your time in kyoto.
Dear Linda, I sincerely appreciate your kind review. Yes, it was an extremely hot and humid day! I have to say I was amazed by your family's stamina! Another thing was that your family is very interested in Japanese culture, and asked some interesting questions. It was an honor for me to share the history and culture! I'm really looking forward to seeing everybody and have some great conversation again! Best Regards, Masaki Makoon Mori
After visiting 4 times Japan we were looking for a day tour in Kyoto focused on places we did not visit or were "off the beaten tracks". Masaki prepared us a fully tailored-made day tour. He started with giving us a leaflet explaining all the places to be visited. He was very attentive to our requests and allowed us to discover beautiful places without any tourists which was important for us. We had lunch in a good local sushi restaurant without any tourist either. He is very fluent in English as he worked several years in Canada and very knowledgable on Japan culture. I would recommend Masaki without any hesitation for anyone looking for a guide in Kyoto.
Dear Philippe Thank you very much for your review. I'm really happy you liked those non-touristy places! I, too, learned a lot from the conversation we had. I especially found your insight about French education very interesting! I really hope I could have another day with you..sorry again for the inconvenience. Looking forward to seeing you again! I know you are going to come back to Japan! Best Regards, Masaki Makoon Mori
Makoon was an exceptionally good guide for me and my family in Kyoto. I'm a pretty critical person but Makoon gave us a five-star experience. Some of the best things were: his email communication before the trip, his excellent English and North American accent, the way he encouraged and connected with my entire family, including my tween/teen kids, and his flexibility. Further to all of that, you could tell that he is really a genuinely great human being, and touring with him was a true win-win - you could tell that he really loved sharing Kyoto with us. I had been to some of the places we visited but Makoon brought a tablet with a couple of slide of grounding information (e.g. about emporers and shoguns) that really made the experience deeper for all of us. My wife and kids generally... read more
Dear David Thank you for your kind review. It really motivates and inspires me to improve as a guide! It was truely my honor that your entire family was eager to listen to historical and cultural information! In only 2days, we saw a lot of different things Including non touristy sites. I'm confident to say you acquired a lot of knowledge that general Japanese people don't know! Your family is one beautiful family, I'm looking forward to the day I go on a trip with my family just like you do! Really hope to see everybody again! Makoon
We hired Masaki (Makoon) for 2 days while we were in Kyoto. He was exactly what we weee looking for. My kids absolutely loved him and his tour. He was so knowledgeable about Japanese history (including the Relstiknships between the Shogun and the Emperor) and was able to explain it to our children in such a fun and easy way. He has his own car so we were able to avoid the hot days when we traveled from different sites. He took us to the popular sites and even some less frequented sites that were amazing. (We even had one site to ourselves for awhile with views of the entire city of Kyoto.). One of highlights for the tour for my kids was having lunch at a sushi conveyor belt restaurant where we ordered food on an IPad like device. The food was delivered on a belt. We deposited our empt... read more
Dear Justin, Lani, Evan, and Bella Thank you very much for your kind review. It's truely my honor to receive such words. I, too, really enjoyed showing your family around. I was especially surprised how your children were interested in Japanese history and culture at such young age! I'm also glad the belt sushi was an experience for you, again it's great to have lunch that locals would have on a daily basis! I really hope to see you and your family in the future. Till the next time! Warm Regards, Masaki Makoon Mori
We engaged Masaki for three full days in Kyoto. He was wonderful. He is extremely knowledgeable, totally fluent in English and has a wonderful personality. He also has his own car which made it easy to get around. He was flexible for changes we made. He takes great photos as well!! 5 stars and highly recommended. He loves his city and his work and he made out tour delightful
Dear Tony Thank you very much for your kind words. It is a huge compliment for me and motivatio n for me to improve as a guide. I was really happy as everybody in your family was eager to learn about the history and culture, and share your thought about it. I'd love to see you all again in the near future. Thank you for valuable lessons "I am everything." "nothing nothing nothing"! Warm Regards, Masaki Makoon Mori
I normally don't write reviews but I felt compelled after how incredible our day was! Masaki was very informative but in a totally relatable manner. Knowledge was passed on through conversation rather than a history lesson. He catered the trip entirely to us and was very flexible. Truly can't speak highly enough about how great this tour was! We have countless photos and memories of our fantastic Kyoto journey!
Dear Joseph Thank you very much for your kind review. I am glad to hear that you enjoyed the history and culture! We covered a lot of different sites in one day, but you guys were fit and enjoyed even an extra site! Please enjoy the photos and remember the great day we shared! Kind Regards, Masaki Makoon Mori
Makoon was one of the nicest tour guides I have ever had in my travels to over 29 countries. He was superiorly knowledgeable, knew the best places and times of days to attend them and responded to my questions before booking within hours. His english was superb and I feel lucky that we had him for the entire day in Kyoto!
Dear Joshua I really appreciate the kind reveiw like yours. It is my honor as a guide to recieve such a message! Once again, I really enjoyed a day with such a friendly and energetic group! we had great conversation, and you made me laugh so hard!! At the same time, I was really happy that you showed respect to the history and culture, and was eager to learn about shinto, buddhism etc... I feel luck that I had great guests like you guys! Looking forward to meeting you again! Masaki Makoon Mori
