Sonargaon served as an important capital and administrative center of eastern Bengal, as well as a major river port. The region became famous for its fine muslin, skilled weavers, and artisans. Panam Nagar gradually declined after the capital was relocated, leaving behind its remarkable historic architecture and heritage.
