Plaza de Armas - City Center
We park the car and start the walking tour:
Santiago City Center & Plaza de Armas
The heart of Santiago, the city center, is a vibrant mix of history, culture, and modern life. It’s home to some of the city’s most iconic landmarks, including Plaza de Armas, the main square since the city’s founding in 1541. Surrounded by colonial-era buildings like the Metropolitan Cathedral and Palacio de la Real Audiencia, the square is a hub for locals and visitors alike. It's also the perfect starting point to explore the city's rich history, bustling streets, and nearby cultural attractions.
Palacio La Moneda
Palacio La Moneda, the **Presidential Palace** of Chile, is one of Santiago’s most important landmarks. Built in the 18th century, it originally served as the headquarters for the Royal Mint, hence the name "La Moneda" (The Coin). Today, it houses the office of the President of Chile. The palace’s neoclassical architecture, along with its iconic changing of the guard ceremony (Weekends at 11:00 am), makes it a must-see for visitors. It stands as a symbol of Chile’s history, culture, and political life.
Calle New York and Central Fish Market
Walking From Palacio La Moneda to Mercado Central
The journey continues from Palacio La Moneda, Chile’s iconic presidential palace, and head towards the lively Calle New York. This bustling street is known for its historic buildings and vibrant atmosphere, with a mix of shops, cafes, and local life. As you walk, you'll see Santiago's blend of old-world charm and modern energy.
Continuing towards the Mercado Central, you’ll enter one of the city’s most famous attractions, known for its fresh seafood and lively market stalls. Here, you can immerse yourself in the local culture, watch fishermen unloading the daily catch, and perhaps sample some of Chile’s finest seafood dishes. The market's architectural beauty, with its wrought-iron structure, adds to the unique charm of this popular spot.
Cerro Santa Lucia
A short but scenic walk takes you to Cerro Santa Lucía, a small hill in the heart of Santiago with rich history and stunning views. This former military fortress was transformed into a public park in the 19th century. As you climb its pathways, you'll pass beautiful gardens, fountains, and historic monuments. At the summit, enjoy panoramic views of the city and the Andes mountains—an ideal spot for photos and a peaceful break amidst the urban landscape.
San Cristobal Cable Car
Next, we’ll drive up to Cerro San Cristóbal, one of the highest points in Santiago. From here, take a scenic cable car ride to the top, offering breathtaking views of the city nestled between the Andes Mountains. At the summit, you’ll be treated to a panoramic vista of Santiago, with its sprawling urban landscape and the surrounding nature. It’s the perfect spot to capture unforgettable photos and soak in the beauty of the city from above.
Las Condes & Parque Bicentenario
Next, we’ll head towards Las Condes, one of Santiago’s most exclusive neighborhoods and the heart of the city’s financial district. With its modern skyscrapers, high-end shopping centers, and luxury residences, Las Condes showcases Santiago's cosmopolitan side. We’ll also visit Parque Bicentenario, a beautiful park offering green spaces, scenic lakes, and striking views of the Andes. It’s a perfect place to relax, enjoy the natural beauty, and see the modern side of the city in full bloom.
