Let me invite you to a stroll through picture perfect streets and alleys, revealing the wonders of Haarlem, big and small. Dating back to the year 1.250, Haarlem is truly a showcase of history and culture. Very much alive today and absolutely worth a visit, only fifteen minutes by train away from the hustle and bustle of crazy Amsterdam. Born in Haarlem, and having worked with the Dutch Board of Tourism, know every corner of the city and will be glad to share its highlights and its secrets.

09:00 AM

Meeting Point

Haarlem Train Station

- Haarlem train station is beautiful piece of history in itself, dating back to the year 1839. We take a few minutes to admire its art nouveau architecture then wander off into Haarlem. (We can also meet up at your preferred place.)

09:10 AM

On and off the beaten track

Haarlem will take you by surprise. There's a story in every street and in every building and there is more to discover, just around the corner.

I will show you the obvious and the parts locals like me would like to keep for themselves...

Are you interested in history? Architecture? Arts? A culinary experience? Please share your 'thing' and I will be glad to fine tune the experience!

09:40 AM

Spaarne River

It's a nice stroll through streets and alleys dating back to the middle ages and along the canals showing its splendour of the 17th century to the river that splits Haarlem into two parts: Het Spaarne. Following the river, we come across the famous Teylers Museum and the beautiful weighing house.

10:30 AM

Golden Streets

No big malls in Haarlem: the old part of the city is packed with small specialty shops. We follow a smart route for you to discover them all, including the many galleries and cozy places where we can have a quick coffee brake if you like.

If you want to visit some of the shops, please feel free.

11:00 AM

Five Corners

Let's check out where the locals live. In a special part of town where narrow streets are filled with planters that add to the village vibe they've created. We pass several beautifully restored small courtyards that make you imagine what life in the 17th century may have looked like.

11:30 AM

Central Square

Is this the most beautiful square in all of Europe? We Haarlemmers certainly think so :-). With the majestic church and the historic city hall looking at each other and the statue of the inventor of book printing in the middle, I could talk for hours about everything that catches our eye. Which I won't because we are on a walking tour and there is more to see!

12:00 PM

Train Station

There still quite some historic Haarlem left when we stroll back to where we started: the train station. Will we make it in three hours? That depends on our own pace. We are taking it easy, specially when it's a warm summer day and I have all the time in the world. Did you like little Amsterdam? I am sure you did!

About Tour Guide Jerry V.

Hi,

Born in Haarlem and having worked with the Dutch Board of Tourism, I will be proud to show you the prettiest place in The Netherlands. Without a hurry because Haarlem is an easy going town, far less crowded and touristy than Amsterdam. Even older as well!

Nowadays I live in the outskirts, four miles from the city center and hop on my bike every time I feel like shopping, try a new restaurant, visit an exhibition in one of its magnificent museums or just feel the vibe. Will you join me?
