About myself – Sharona L.
My parents made Aliya= emigrated from Philadelphia to Israel in 1963. So I was born in 1970 and raised here as a "sabra" – that’s what native Israelis call themselves. I grew up hearing both English and Hebrew in my home.
My family – parents, 3 siblings and myself – always liked travelling and nature. Camping and hiking are a good part of my best childhood memories. As a teenager I joined a youth hiking club which was based in the Judean Desert. The club belonged to the SPNI – Society for the Protection of Nature in Israel. During our hikes we also learned about the geology, biology and history of the places we visited.
I knew already back then, that this is what I wanted to do with my life – hike in nature and visit interesting sites and places.
After graduating high school I did my mandatory service in the Israel Defense Forces. I was a gardener, and fiercely fought against all weeds in the army bases I served in…
When released from service, I went to study "Land of Israel Studies" at the Beit-Berl Teachers College. I received a B.Ed in geography and my official Tour Guide certification from the Ministry of Tourism in 1995. I have been a tour guide ever since.
I love my job, and I love my country. I named both my sons after mountains in Israel – Tavor (20), and Bental (17).

There are lucky ones who were born and grew up in Portugal, and there are those who chose this amazing country later as their home. I still consider myself lucky to be the latter one.
I'm sure there are a lot of things that I see differently from a deep-rooted local, just as there are certain things that I notice and appreciate so that I can tell you about cultural differences and show you those little things that local people could take for granted but are indeed a valuable part of their lives.
I have been working as a tour guide and guidebook writer for more than 15 years. I have always had a passion to explore cities and landscapes and then show the most interesting parts of the world to others.

My introduction to hiking and the love for nature happened at the early age of five when I started joining my father on fishing trips to the coastal regions of the Cape of Good Hope section within the Table Mountain National Park. This included hiking through the fynbos to reach fishing spots at the water’s edge. I remember playing in the rock pools of the intertidal zones as well as catching “klip vissies” (small rock fish) there.
In later years I went on to join a swimming club, become a water polo player and a lifeguard. The aquatic activities further expanded my love for the ocean. In fact, I spent over 25 years of his life volunteering as a beach lifeguard along the False Bay coast, as well as volunteering as a crew leader on the Cape Town Helicopter Surf Rescue service.
Soon after getting married, my wife Bridget and I embarked on an extended backpacking venture across Europe and the Middle East. Over time we have been fortunate to travel to and experience 23 different countries around the world.
It is this love for nature, the outdoors, hiking and travel that made for perfect ingredients to become a Cultural Guide, an Overnight Off Trail Mountain and Adventure Guide, and to register a Tour Operator business
