At your hotel (In a 3-km radius of the city centre)
We start from Stockholm Centralen for a ( 40' ) train ride across a beautiful lcentral Sweden landscape.Once we arrive to the destination, we stop by Gamla Uppsala( Old Uppsala) ,4 km north of the town.
Gamla Uppsala is an old Viking settlement where we visit a medieval church dating from the 13th cntury, a small museum, the Viking Mounds ,the tombs used to bury Viking kings and a timber OPen Air museum dating from the 18 and 19th century.
Then we proceed to Uppsala to visit Carl Linne museum , a place where the 1800 world famous Botanist used to live and work ( 35' ).
Then ,we move to Uppsala museum to get a picture about the local folklore and traditions,( about 25'):
The Cathedral in Gothic architectural style was built in 1270 (13th ) and is the biggest in Scandinavia .Inside are buried famous personalities such as : the Swidish king ,Gustav Vasa, Carl Linne ( the Botanist).The Cathedral is also the Seat of the Swedish Protest Church.
Uppsala university was founded in 15th century and started with 12 students!The Building , we visit is dating from the 19th century.And half of the Swedish Nobel Prize winners used to study in the town!
The University Library ( Karolina Redeviva ) is the biggest in Sweden with 5 million books!
A wide range of plants continue the floral display throughout the summer. As late summer approaches the kitchen gardens are at their most beautiful and the autumn offers a colourful display from both native and exotic trees and bushes.
The Gardens were created by Carl Linne and used to teach his students.Nowadays , they are part of the University.
After the visit to the Botanical Gardens , we take a coffee break under exotic trees from all over the world inside the Department of Agriculture.( around 20').
We end our tour in Uppsala Castle,dating back to the 16th century ( in 1549) during the reign of Swedish King Gustav Vasa who intended it as a fortress.
The castle is the location of several major events in the history of Uppsala and Sweden; for example ‘the Sture Murders’ in 1567 when several noblemen were butchered at the behest of deranged King Erik XIV who had accused them of treason.
We board the direct train to Stockholm.
