Meeting Point

Harvard Square

- Upon leaving the Harvard T stop, there is a kiosk shown in the first photo. We will start our tour from there.

Cambridge Common

Historic common. Site where future President Washington first took command of the Continental Army.

Longfellow House

Originally the home of a Loyalist, it was one of many stately homes abandoned on "Tory Row" at the start of the revolution. Shortly after the Battle of Bunker Hill it became General Washington's Headquarters until the British Evacuation of Boston. In the 19th Century it became the home of the poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow.

Brattle Square

Like most places in Boston, Brattle Square is not a Square, but an intersection. Many cafes and pubs offer a chance to sit down and refresh.

Charles River

The Charles River divides Boston and Cambridge. The river is a major center for rowing and we will see plenty of activity as we walk up to Harvard Stadium.

Harvard Yard

The center of the Harvard campus and home to Widener library, one of the most important and largest libraries in the country. The college's oldest buildings are located here.

Harvard Art Museum

The Fogg, Sackler and Busch-Reisenger have been brought together. Extensive and important art from antiquity to the present.

Candlepin bowling/ Lunch

Returning back to Harvard Sq we will take the Red Line two stops to Davis Square for some candlepin bowling and Flatbread Pizza. This New England version of bowling uses smaller pins and smaller balls. Alternatively, we can walk to MIT and take lunch in one of the many restaurants on the way.

Ending Point

Davis Square/MIT

About Tour Guide Russell W.

Born in Boston, raised in Lexington and a traveler myself, I am intimately familiar with the history of my city and what a visitor would want to explore.

I majored in Classical Civilization and History at Boston University. Following my graduation, I worked as an archeologist in Greece, before becoming an independent traveler, supporting myself as I went.

As we walk Boston, the history from books becomes tangible. It is also a town where unique and special is hidden in plain site. I will help you experience it. From Section 24 at Fenway, the starting line in Hopkinton and the coxswain’s seat on The Head of the Charles, I know the connection between Boston and its sports. If culture is your passion, we can visit the Boston Public Library, the bookstores of Harvard Square or one of the many amazing Museums.

If you want to get outside the city, Lexington and Concord, the clam shacks of the North Shore and more await.

I have been an unofficial guide for visiting friends and family for years, and I invite you share my passion for Boston.
