Your tour begins at pickup. As your guide I am available to answer questions. You will be introduced to our island's culture, history and local knowledge including the places we drive by on our way up to Volcano National Park. During this tour we will hike around and inside an inactive volcano. We will also look at an active volcano. During the tour you will learn about local flora and fauna and the geology that makes Volcano National Park special.
This itinerary can be customized to meet your needs and preferences. Send me a message with your requests!

Pick up and orientation for the tour.
We arrive at the gates of the park. Park entrance fees are included in the price of the tour.
We'll stop at the welcome center to get oriented for our adventure. You'll learn where we will be hiking in relation to the active volcano. You'll also learn historical references, culture and some basic geology to help frame our tour around the park. Restrooms are available at the welcome center.
From this point you can see lava flowing, bubbling and sometimes shooting up from the ground. Volcano activity is not always persistent or reliable so ask in advance if the lava is visible. Also, the red glow of lava is best viewed at night. During the day time it may look more like smoke than flowing red lava. We'll get back in the vehicle for a short drive to the next overlook.
From here you will hear about the epic battle of Pele and Hi‘iakaikapoliopele, Pele's equally powerful Sister. Then we will drive to the trailhead at Crater Rim Trail where we will descend into the inactive volcano, Kilauea Ike. This hike is a 3.3 mile (5.3 km) loop. The trail is steep and rocky in places with a descent & ascent of 400 feet (122 m). We will plan for approximately 2 to 3 hours.
Note: At this point we may be ready to conclude our visit to the park. Nāhuku Lava Tube is optional and takes about one hour on average. As your guide, I am responsible for getting you back to our meeting location on time.

Food is not included but I can make recommendations for nearby restaurants or places to get water and snacks for the hike.
I recommend renting a vehicle appropriate for the drive. For the Volcano Tour an off-road vehicle is not necessary. However, if you are scheduling an off road adventure, be sure to rent a Jeep. I will have my own insurance coverage and will be your personal driver during the tour. If you need a tour van to accommodate a group advance reservations are often required. A Jeep may or may not be available on short notice. Seatbelts are required and your safety is my number one priority.
Thank you for your consideration.
Please let us know if you have any special needs. We will do our best to accommodate your needs and customize your tour appropriately based on your individual and group needs.
Weather conditions change quickly on Hawaii Island. Visits to the ocean, waterfalls, river hikes, and the summit of Mauna Kea can be closed for safety reasons. We usually have alternatives to explore so we ask that you remain flexible in your choice of destinations. There's plenty to explore but not every place is the best place to explore all the time.
To summit Mauna Kea, you will need to rent a 4x4 Jeep. If this is not possible please let me know so other arrangements can be made. It is typically more expensive for me to rent a vehicle.
For surf lessons, I will do my best to find safe and appropriate conditions for your lessons. However, there are times when the ocean isn't safe to enter. For that reason, we have to reserve the right to cancel 24 hours before your lesson is scheduled. We can usually tell the day before if the conditions will be safe.
