Akasaka Detached palace was designed by Katayama Tokuma, a leading Japanese architect, Neo-Barouque style Westan building. It was constructed 1909 as an official residence for the Crown Prince. The exterior was modeled after Buckingham Palace in England, while interior and gardens resemble the Palace of Versailles in France.

Today the State Guest House provides accommodations for state and official guests from abroad such as monarchs,presidents, and prime ministers. Also have served as venues for important international conferences including the Tokyo Summit Meetings three times in the past.

The Akasaka Detached Palace was designated as a National Treasure of Japan in 2009. The building is now open to the public.
