Discover San José from above on a gentle 2-hour mountain walk (6k) through the highlands of San Antonio de Escazú.

Enjoy beautiful viewpoints, take memorable photos, and learn about Costa Rica’s mountain ranges, volcanoes, the natural history of the Talamanca range, and the flora of the highlands with a local guide. The experience includes a private car from El Chumico to the mountain trail, guiding throughout the hike, and a light snack to enjoy at one of the viewpoints.

Itinerary

07:30 AM

Meeting Point

El Chumico, San Antonio de Esczú

- El Chumico is my operation center, and where I live is also en google maps. From here, all tours depart.

08:20 AM

Start the walk to the mountains

The drive takes us from the urban area into the higher elevations of the Escazú mountains, where we begin our walk.

08:50 AM

Walk for scenic viewpoints

The walk covers approximately 5 kilometers and is designed as a gentle mountain walk rather than a strenuous trek. Along the route, we visit several scenic viewpoints where you can stop, take photographs, and appreciate the spectacular landscapes surrounding San José.

On a clear day, the changing perspectives from the mountains offer a wonderful opportunity to see the relationship between the city, the Central Valley, and the surrounding mountain ranges.

But this experience is about more than simply reaching beautiful viewpoints. As we walk, your local guide will introduce you to the natural history of Costa Rica's highlands and help you understand the landscape around you.

We will talk about the country's major mountain ranges and volcanoes, with a particular focus on the Talamanca mountain range and its importance within Costa Rica's natural geography.

We will also explore the flora of the high-elevation areas, learning how vegetation changes as you move into different mountain environments and how these ecosystems are connected to the country's water resources and biodiversity.

Along the way, we'll make time to pause and enjoy the surroundings rather than rushing from one viewpoint to the next. At one of the scenic overlooks, we'll stop for a light local snack, giving you time to relax, take photographs, and simply enjoy being in the mountains above San José.

10:30 AM

Return to El Chumico, where we began.

The experience finishes with a return to El Chumico, where we began.

San José from Above is ideal for travelers who want to experience a different side of San José — one that is quieter, greener, and connected to the mountains that surround the city. It combines gentle exercise, scenic viewpoints, photography, and local interpretation in a relaxed morning experience.

Your experience includes private transportation from El Chumico to the mountain trail, a local guide throughout the walk, and a light snack at one of the viewpoints.

Rather than simply looking at Costa Rica's mountains, you'll have the opportunity to understand the landscapes, ecosystems, and natural history behind the views — while experiencing the highlands with someone who lives in the area.
