Dublin Castle
Dublin Castle is a major Irish governmental complex, formerly the fortified seat of British rule in Ireland until 1922.
Dublin Castle fulfilled a number of roles through its history. Originally built as a defensive fortification for the Norman city of Dublin, it later evolved into a royal residence, resided in by the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland or Viceroy of Ireland, the representative of the monarch. The second in command in the Dublin Castle administration, the Chief Secretary for Ireland, also had his offices there. Over the years parliament and law courts met at the castle before moving to new purpose-built venues. It also served as a military garrison. Upon formation of the Free State in 1922, the castle immediately assumed the role of court complex, as the Four Courts on the Liffey quays had been badly damaged during the Civil War - a role it served for the first decade of the newly independent state.
St. Patrick's Cathedral
Saint Patrick’s Cathedral has been part of Ireland’s history for over 800 years and today is one of the most popular visitor attractions in Dublin City. Founded in 1191 in honour of Ireland’s patron saint, Saint Patrick’s Cathedral offers visitors a rich and compelling cultural experience and is one of the few buildings left from medieval Dublin. St Patrick baptised Christian converts on this site 1500 years ago.
St. Patrick's Cathedral is the National Cathedral of the Church of Ireland and is Ireland's largest cathedral. The Cathedral now serves as a place of worship, a visitor attraction and as a host for many iconic events.
Built in 1220, the Cathedral hosts services (twice daily Sunday - Friday). At the stunning cathedral, visitors will see a selection of artifacts relating to Jonathan Swift. Jonathan Swift, the author of Gulliver’s Travels, was Dean of Saint Patrick’s Cathedral in the 1700s and he is one of many burials on site.
The cathedral also features a Discovery Space with iPads playing sounds from the choir and touch screen technology illuminating the cathedral’s long history. Perhaps more than any other building in Ireland, Saint Patrick’s Cathedral embodies the history and heritage of all Irish people of all backgrounds from the earliest times to the present day.
Since Saint Patrick baptised Christian converts nearby over 1500 years ago, this holy site has been a place of spiritual encounter for countless generations.
