Jeonju Hanok Village
This is the largest traditional hanok village in Korea, comprising a cluster of approximately 700 hanok in the Pungnam-dong area of Jeonju, and is the nation’s only hanok cluster located in an urban center. Established in 1910, it serves as a significant site in the development of Korea’s modern residential culture. The area is dotted with important cultural heritage sites—such as Gyeonggijeon, Omokdae, and Hyanggyo—as well as over 20 cultural facilities. It stands as one of South Korea’s premier tourist destinations, embodying the essence of “Korean style” through hanok, Korean cuisine, hanji (Korean paper), traditional music, hanbok, and traditional medicine.
Nambu local market / Youth mall
The Jeonju Nambu Market Night Market is Jeonju’s premier night market, where you can enjoy a wide variety of foods, from seafood and meat to street snacks and desserts. At first glance, Jeonju Nambu Market looks like an old traditional market, but it has actually evolved into a multifaceted cultural space where tradition, youth culture, art, and food culture coexist. This market, which naturally formed near the South Gate of Jeonju Fortress during the Joseon Dynasty, is a community market boasting a tradition of over 150 years.
Omokdae Observatory
Omokdae is the site where King Taejo Yi Seong-gye, after decisively defeating Japanese pirates at the Battle of Hwangsan in the 6th year of King Woo of Koryeo’s reign (1380), visited his hometown of Jeonju and held a banquet with his soldiers. It is said that the name “Omok” derives from the landscape, where five peaks gently connect. Today, a stele commemorating the virtues of King Taejo Yi Seong-gye stands at the summit. It is a meaningful place where visitors can experience both the history of Jeonju and the narrative of the nation’s founding.
Jaman Mural village
As you climb the hill behind Jeonju Hanok Village, Jaman Mural Village comes into view, where color and stories bloom on every wall. The old alleys, once steeped in the gray hues of time, are now filled with people’s laughter and paintings. In this village, where residents rebuilt their lives after the war, residents and artists joined hands to pick up their brushes, and through their art, the murals have brought the village’s memories back to life. Sunlight spreads across the walls, and a cat and a child laugh together on the narrow steps. The paintings are not mere decorations; they feel like a warm language that soothes the wounds left by time.
