Meeting Point
Andong Train Station Main Waiting Hall or Guest's Hotel in Andong City
- Meeting Point: Andong Station (KTX) We will meet at Andong Station. The easiest way to reach Andong is by KTX from Seoul or Cheongnyangni Station in Seoul. If the KTX schedule doesn't fit your travel plans, you can also take an express bus from Dong Seoul Bus Terminal or Seoul Express Bus Terminal. The Andong Bus Terminal is located right next to Andong Station, so we will still meet at Andong Station regardless of whether you arrive by train or bus. If needed, I'll be happy to provide detailed transportation information after your booking.
Bongjeongsa temple
Bongjeongsa Temple is one of Korea's most important UNESCO World Heritage sites and home to Geuknakjeon Hall, the oldest surviving wooden building in Korea. Hidden in the mountains of Andong, this peaceful temple offers more than beautiful architecture. It reveals how Buddhism, traditional craftsmanship, and harmony with nature have shaped Korean culture for centuries.
Founded over 1,200 years ago during the Silla Kingdom, Bongjeongsa has remained an active temple where history and daily life continue together. Unlike many famous temples crowded with visitors, it offers a quiet atmosphere where you can truly appreciate the beauty of traditional Korean architecture and its natural surroundings.
The highlight is Geuknakjeon Hall, a masterpiece of wooden architecture built with remarkable craftsmanship and traditional joinery techniques. It stands as a symbol of Korea's architectural wisdom and the dedication of generations who carefully preserved it.
During our visit, you'll discover more than historical facts. I'll share the stories behind the temple, explain how Buddhism influenced Korean society and culture, and reveal why Bongjeongsa became part of the UNESCO World Heritage list. Rather than simply visiting an ancient temple, you'll experience a place where history, nature, and timeless values come together, helping you understand a deeper side of Korea.
Buyongdae Observatory
Buyongdae Cliff is the best place to understand Hahoe Folk Village. More than a spectacular viewpoint, it tells the story of the people, traditions, and values that shaped one of Korea's most remarkable UNESCO World Heritage sites. The name "Buyongdae" means "Floting Lotus Flower," while "Hahoe" means "a village surrounded by water." From the cliff, the Nakdong River embraces the village like a lotus flower, making it an ideal location according to traditional Korean feng shui (Pungsu).
Before reaching the cliff, we'll pass Hwacheon Seowon, dedicated to the descendants of the Pungsan Ryu clan, and Okyeonjeongsa, where the great scholar and statesman Ryu Seong-ryong wrote *Jingbirok* (The Book of Corrections) after the Japanese invasions. Nearby is Gyeomamjeongsa, the retreat of his elder brother, Ryu Un-ryong. It is said the brothers often walked these forest paths together, discussing Neo-Confucian philosophy and the future of their country.
From Buyongdae, the entire village spreads out below. The houses face the river, following traditional feng shui principles, while elegant tile-roofed homes stand alongside thatched houses, showing how nobles and commoners shared the same community despite the strict social system of the Joseon Dynasty.
That spirit still lives on today through Seonyujulbulnori, once enjoyed by the nobility, and the Hahoe Byeolsingut Mask Dance, performed by ordinary people.
Byeongsanseowon Confucian Academy
Byeongsanseowon Confucian Academy is one of Korea's UNESCO World Heritage sites and one of the finest examples of Confucian education during the Joseon Dynasty. More than a historic academy, it was a place where scholars cultivated their character, pursued knowledge, and prepared to serve the nation. Education here was about becoming a person of integrity and responsibility.
The academy is closely connected to Ryu Seong-ryong, one of Korea's greatest scholars and statesmen. Built to honor his achievements and preserve his philosophy, it became an important center of learning for future generations.
One of its highlights is Mandaeru Pavilion, overlooking the Nakdong River and the dramatic Byeongsan cliffs. Confucian scholars believed that learning should exist in harmony with nature, and the academy beautifully reflects this philosophy through its simple architecture and peaceful surroundings.
As we walk through the academy, you'll discover how each building served a purpose, from studying and teaching to honoring respected scholars. Rather than impressive decoration, the architecture emphasizes simplicity, balance, and wisdom.
Today, Byeongsanseowon offers more than a glimpse into Korea's past. It reveals the educational values and moral principles that helped shape Korean society and continue to influence its culture today.
Hahoe Folk Village – A Living UNESCO World Heritage Village
Hahoe Folk Village, designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2010, is one of Korea's best-preserved traditional clan villages. Unlike an open-air museum, it remains a living community where descendants of the Pungsan Ryu clan continue to preserve traditions that have been passed down for more than 600 years.
The village was founded by Ryu Jong-hae, who settled here according to the principles of Korean Feng Shui (Pungsu-jiri), believing the river and surrounding mountains created the perfect place for harmony and prosperity. The village later flourished under his sixth-generation descendants, Ryu Un-ryong and his younger brother Ryu Seong-ryong, one of the greatest scholars and statesmen of the Joseon Dynasty.
As you explore the village, you will visit historic landmarks including Yangjindang, the oldest house of the Ryu clan, Chunghyodang, the former residence of Ryu Seong-ryong, and the sacred Samsindang Tree, which has protected the village for centuries.
Hahoe is famous for its rich cultural traditions, including the Hahoe Byeolsingut Mask Dance, where commoners humorously criticized the aristocracy and social injustice through masks and satire, and the beautiful Seonyu Julbul Nori, a spectacular riverside fire festival enjoyed for generations.
What makes Hahoe truly special is that noble families and commoners lived together within a clearly defined social system while preserving Confucian values, folk beliefs, and community traditions.
