Plovdiv - At the Crossroads of Balkan Cultures
Plovdiv is a Balkan city with a history spanning more than five millennia. It was founded by the Thracian tribe of the Bessi. Later Macedonian king Philip II conquered it in 342 BCE and named it Philippopolis. Since the Roman conquest, Plovdiv has served as a rest stop on the Via Militaris, a road that continues to function today, connecting the East (Istanbul) with the West (Vienna).
