The town is located on the left shore of the Vjosa River. Gjirokaster is the next place to be visited. It is located in a valley between the Wide mountains and the Drino river valley. The old town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, described as "a rare example of a well-preserved Ottoman town, built by farmers of large estate".

In fact, though it has an early Ottoman name, it was definitely an Illyrian settlement since the 4th century BC. Settled on the valley of Shkumbini river, it developed and expanded as a station along the famous Via Egnatia Roman road. The Romans called it ‘Ad-Quintum mansio’.
