Adam Clayton Powell Jr State Office Building -163 W 125th Street
- This will be the designated meeting point for the walking tour. This building was constructed in honor of Adam Clayton Powell Jr, who was the first African-American elected to the US Congress.
Apollo Theatre
The Apollo theatre is a legendary venue that is known for launching the careers of several African-American performers. It has hosted legends like Ella Fitzgerald, James Brown and Stevie Wonder
Hotel Theresa- 2080 Adam Clayton Powell BLVD
This 13 story landmark hotel was built in 1913. The hotel was known as the "Waldorf of Harlem" and hosted figures like Joe Louis, Malcolm X and Harry Belafonte.
Planet Harlem Mural-126th Street and Malcolm X BLVD
This mural created in 2012 celebrates the 100th anniversary of the Harlem renaissance . It portrays some of the individuals that helped shape Harlem's history.
The Tree Of Hope-131st Street and Adam Clayton Powell BLVD
The Tree Of Hope was an elm tree that stood at 131st Street and 7th Avenue(Adam Clayton Powell BLVD). It was considered a symbol of good luck to many performers including Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong and Ethel Waters.
Former site of the Lafayette Theatre-132nd Street
The Lafayette was one of the most famous theatres in Harlem. It was known as "the house beautiful." It is also known as the first major theatre to desegregate.
Former site of Small's Paradise-2294 Adam Clayton Powell BLVD
This iconic establishment was opened in 1925 and was Harlem's longest running nightclub before closing in 1986.
Striver's Row-137th and 138th Streets Between ADP and FDB BLVD
These blocks are designated as a historical district and feature renaissance revival styled townhouses. Striver's Row is where Harlem's elite resided.
Mother AME Zion Church-140 W 137th Street
The oldest African-American church with a congregation that started in 1796. Mother AME Church was an important part of the Underground Railroad.
Former site of the Cotton Club- 142nd Street and Malcolm X BLVD
Harlem's most infamous club . The entertainment playground of some of Hollywood's elite. Jazz gretas Duke Ellington , Louis Armstrong and Lena Horne were regular performers.
Former site of Jungle Alley- 133rd Street Between Malcolm X BLVD and 5th Avenue
This block of rowhouses was the destination to go to for jazz and other forms of entertainment after hours.
