Enoshima is a small island connected by 500m bridge to Shonan beach, reachable by some 25 minutes train ride from Kamakura.
There is Enoshima shrine in the island.
During the Edo period, many people visited the island as pilgrims to the shrine, but actually many of them were sightseeing tourists. In Edo period, people could not travel freely beyond their town borders. Visiting shrines or temples as pilgrims was a good reason to get certificate to move beyond the town borders, a kind of passport, from local government.
If you visit Enoshima today, you'll find souvenir shops and restaurants along the narrow uphill street which is the approach to Enoshima shrine.
Beyond the shrine, the road becomes downhill which leads you to the cave on the other side of the island. There are a few restaurants along the road.
If you have time to have lunch or a cup of coffee in one of these restraurants, be sure to take the outsid table on the cliff facing Pacific ocean.
You will be welcome by black kites, a kind of hawk, gliding in front of you.
Enoshima will be the venue for the Yacht race in Tokyo Olympic 2020.
