Beginning of raised path from the second torii
Samurai warriors took control of the country and eventually established the military government for the first time in history in the late 12th century. The seat of the government, the old city of Kamakura was formed centering around Tsurugaoka Hachiman Shrine. The founder of the Kamakura Shogunate is named Minamoto Yoritomo. The raised approach path called Dankazura was built by order of Yoritomo. Although Kamakura as the government seat lasted from 1185 to 1333, even after that it remained the prestige and it has become a popular sightseeing place. In or around Kamakura, there are many historical and scenic interests. Throughout the year, Kamakura is attractive to travelers all over the world.
