The Imperial Palace with its grounds is located on the site of former residential palace of the successive Tokugawa Shoguns in the Edo period.
Emperor Meiji moved here from Kyoto.
This palace is devided into three parts,
➀The Palace、formerly West-wing of Edo castle; emperor resides now. We can visit the limited areas.
②The east garden、formerly main buildings of Edo castle; now open to the public.
③Gaien, fermerly Daimyo Mansions' area ( Daimyo is a Japanese feudal lord) ; now open to the public
I can show you some pictures of remnants of Edo castle.
Fujimi Ygura is a three storied keep. This was a watch tower.
One of the oldest remnants of Edo castle.
The rampart is about 15 meters.
Stone wall and moat.
Edo casle was defenced by sturdy stone- walls and deep moats.
This view is from the KItadume-Gate.
Unfortunately the main donjon of Edo castle was destoryed in the great fire of 1657.
Now we can see only the stone wall that formed its foundation for the next new donjon but not be constructed.
Above is the model of the last keep at the age of Kanei.
