Preah Ko temple

Preah Ko is the historic cradle of classical Khmer architecture, built in 879 AD by King Indravarman I. This stunning site is the very first temple erected in the ancient capital of Hariharalaya, today known as the Roluos group. The name "Preah Ko" translates to "The Sacred Bull," which you will spot immediately as you walk up. Notice the three beautifully weathered sandstone statues of Nandi—the loyal bull and mount of the Hindu god Shiva—kneeling in devotion right in front of the central towers. This temple was built not just for worship, but as a deeply personal sanctuary, dedicated to the king’s ancestors, merging divine reverence with family legacy. As you step closer to the platform, look up at the six distinct brick towers arranged in two neat rows. The front towers honor the king's male ancestors, including the empire's great founder Jayavarman II, while the rear towers are dedicated to their wives. What makes Preah Ko a true highlight of this tour is the breathtaking artistry left behind on these walls. While the core of the towers is built from red brick, they were originally coated in a thick plaster made from lime, palm sugar, and sand. If you look closely at the lintels and doorways, you can still see incredibly intricate carvings of multi-headed Nagas, mythical Garudas, and delicate floral scrolls that have survived over eleven hundred years of monsoons and history.

10:30 AM

Bakong temple

Bakong Temple, the crowning jewel of the ancient city of Hariharalaya and the very first temple mountain constructed of sandstone in the Angkor region, was built in the late 9th century by King Indravarman I. This breathtaking sanctuary was dedicated to Lord Shiva and served as the official state temple of the Khmer Empire's early capital. As you approach the massive outer enclosure, you are greeted by an expansive moat that represents the cosmic oceans surrounding Mount Meru, the sacred home of the Hindu gods. The innovative, five-tiered pyramid design symbolizes the five levels of the mythical mountain, ascending grandly toward the heavens. Each level reflects incredible architectural evolution, initially guarded by beautifully carved stone elephants that stand sentry at the corners. At the absolute pinnacle, a striking central tower rises into the sky, added during later eras, which perfectly showcases the enduring religious significance of this sacred space. Walking through the eastern gate, look closely at the exquisite lintels and remaining stucco bas-reliefs that illustrate classical Hindu mythologies; they reveal a level of craftsmanship that paved the way for masterpieces like Angkor Wat. Bakong is not just a collection of historic stones, but a profound spiritual monument where early Khmer art, engineering, and cosmology seamlessly intersect, offering a peaceful and awe-inspiring journey back to the foundational roots of Angkor civilization.

12:00 PM

Lo Lei temple

Lolei Temple, a captivating island sanctuary that serves as the final great construction of the 9th-century capital, Hariharalaya, was consecrated in 893 by King Yasovarman I. This historic site was uniquely built on an artificial island right in the center of the now-dry Indratataka baray (reservoir). The king dedicated these towers to his ancestors—his parents and grandparents—with the inscriptions on the doorways beautifully preserving their names for eternity. Originally planned as a group of six brick towers, four remain standing today, deliberately grouped in two rows to reflect the divine balance of male and female energies. As you look closer at the weathered red brickwork, you will see the remarkable preservation of the sandstone lintels and false doors. These elements showcase exceptionally detailed carvings of Indra riding his multi-headed elephant, Airavata, alongside delicate devatas (sacred female deities) and guardians holding tridents, which reflect the pinnacle of the classic Roluos art style. Today, the ancient ruins share their sacred grounds with a vibrant, modern Buddhist monastery, offering a beautiful contrast between centuries of history and living local culture. Exploring Lolei gives us a rare, intimate look at the engineering genius and deep ancestral worship that laid the foundations for the entire Angkor Empire before the capital moved.

The authentic floating village of Kampong Phluk

The beautiful, authentic floating village of Kampong Phluk is a remarkable commune built directly on the floodplains of the Tonle Sap Lake. As you journey into this vibrant community, you will witness a truly unique way of life where human resilience beautifully adapts to the seasonal rhythms of nature. The village is famous for its towering stilted houses, which stand up to 10 meters high. During the dry season, these wooden structures loom grandly above the dusty ground, but when the monsoon rains arrive and the lake swells, the water rises right to the doorsteps, transforming the area into a stunning, mirror-like aquatic world where boats completely replace motorbikes. You will cruise along the bustling main waterways, passing by local fishermen sorting their daily catch, floating markets packed with fresh produce, and children paddling skillfully to school. A major highlight of this tour is stepping into a small, traditional rowboat to gently glide through the flooded mangrove forest. This serene, emerald canopy is a crucial sanctuary for diverse water birds and local wildlife. To finish this journey perfectly, you will head out to the open waters of the Great Lake just as the late afternoon approaches. Here, you will pause to witness a breathtaking, uninterrupted sunset casting warm, golden reflections across the horizon—a deeply peaceful moment that captures the timeless spirit of Cambodia's water culture.

Wonderful tour around Siem Reap

Saroun was an excellent guide for our 2 days touring Angkor Wat and the surrounding temples. He accommodated all of our requests and balanced the needs of our diverse group. The van was comfortable, with excellent AC. After each temple, we’d return to cold water and fresh cold face-cloths. Saroun spoke excellent English and animated the history, religion, politics and architecture of the sites. Each temple came alive with his guidance. We absolutely loved our time in Cambodia. Plus he takes excellent photos with his advanced phone and knows where to get the best shots! I highly recommend you engage his services for the best time.

Awesome tour

Both driver & guide were flexible in adjusting schedule on the fly. Highly recommended. For English speakers, guide has an excellent command of the language & speaks quite clearly.

I would like to express my gratitude to your review on my touring job in Angkor World Heritage Site. Wish you all the best!

Brilliant!

Saroun is a lovely gentleman and fantastic guide. He delivers the tour in an engaging way by using conversation as the way to communicate. Saroun has extensive knowledge of the Angkor Wat national park and Cambodia. He details the importance of Cambodia's historical events. The driver that works with Saroun is very courteous and kept the vehicle in immaculate condition considering we had a lot of rain on our tour, not to mention the cold towels and water to refresh you. If you are looking for any tour in Cambodia that Saroun offers, he is your guide! You don't need to look anywhere else, just book with Saroun!
