Kbal Spean
Begin your adventure from Siem Reap to explore the carving of vestiges began with the reign of King Suryavarman I and ended with the reign of King Udayadityavarman II; these two kings ruled between the 11th and 12th centuries. The 1,000 lingas, but not other sculptures, are attributed to a minister of Suryavarman I during the 11th century, and these were carved by hermits who lived in the area. Inscriptions at the site testify to the fact that most of the sculpting was done during the reign of Udayadityavarman II. It is also mentioned that King Udayadityavarman II consecrated a golden ling here in 1059 AD. It is believed that the Siem Reap River flowing into Angkor is blessed by the sacred linga over which it flows.
Bonteay Srei Temple
Banteay Srei well known for its beautiful delicate carvings in warm pink sandstone. Officially, Banteay Srei was completed on the 22nd April 967 AD. The temple was dedicated to Shiva as were many of the temples built during this time.
Originally, Banteay Srei was called Tribhuvanamahesvara which means the lord of the threefold world. In fact, different parts of the temple were dedicated to different gods. The east-west axis and the buildings to the south were dedicated to Shiva and the ones to the north of the axis were dedicated to Vishnu.
The more modern name “Banteay Srei” was given to the temple because the intricate carvings. The name means “citadel of the women” or “citadel of beauty” in reference to these bas-relief carvings which contain many carvings of devatas.
Elephant Sanctuary
In the afternoon, continue to an Elephant Sanctuary, where you’ll observe these gentle giants in their natural forest environment. Feed the elephants, take photos with them, and offer handmade, healthy snacks as you get up close in a respectful and ethical setting.
Engage in an enriching mud bath experience, combining fun with learning as you watch the elephants interact, play by the pond, and enjoy their surroundings. The experience concludes with a refreshing bathing session alongside the elephants.
