Sidetrack off beaten path of Chongqing local life and vibe with a local friend in public transport
Beside from being known for monorail and lighted up village that are full of tourists, Chongqing is a city for city explorers and foodies. As an inland third-tier city, it preserves the contrast between 1980s slums and futuristic high-rises which is of interests to westerners; it also preserves more dramatic city topography where locals call home.
This tour will lead you away from touristy spots, and through the local and mind-blowing contrast that you can use as food for thought.

- I will meet you at the Glenview Hotel lobby. I will text you the details if you don't know how to navigate. This is where we start the tour.
Luzumiao Street/Wet Market
This market is recognized for its authentic local atmosphere and rich history. Housed in a unique, multi-story cylindrical building, the market features clear functional zoning across its floors, offering everything from fresh meat and seafood to vibrant vegetables and local snacks. Beyond being a vital "food basket" for residents, it perfectly blends traditional street-level vitality with modern, smart management systems. Visitors can easily immerse themselves in the genuine day to day life, smoky charm of the mountain city's everyday life here.
Linhualu Residential Block
Lin Hua Road is a historic, multi-level residential community in Chongqing's Yuzhong District that perfectly captures the city's authentic, everyday charm. Built into the steep hillsides, its winding staircases and staggered buildings beautifully showcase the unique 8D topography of the mountain city. This atmospheric neighborhood has recently gained fame as a cinematic filming location, with its dappled sunlight filtering through old trees creating a nostalgic, movie-like aesthetic. It serves as an ideal, less-crowded alternative for those looking to experience the genuine, unhurried rhythm of old Chongqing.
Laojundong Taoist Temple
Nestled on south bank of Yangtse and upon Nanshan Mountain, Laojun Cave is Chongqing's most important Taoist temple, renowned for its unique architecture built into the cliffside. The absolute highlight of this serene sanctuary is the Nantianmen (South Heavenly Gate) observation deck, which serves as the perfect vantage point to take in breathtaking panoramic views of the entire mountain city. From this elevated spot, visitors can gaze down at the magnificent Yuzhong Peninsula and the stunning confluence of the Yangtze and Jialing rivers.
Beyond its spectacular scenery, the temple is also highly regarded for its spiritual atmosphere and a glimpse into Chinese taoist practice. With free admission, it offers a perfect blend of rich cultural heritage and natural beauty for anyone visiting Chongqing
Minzhucun Neighborhood (socialistic heritage)
Originally the staff housing for the state-owned Jianshe Machine Tool Factory, this neighborhood is a living monument to China's collectivist era of the 1950s through the 1970s. The neighborhood's authentic communal atmosphere is beautifully preserved through its traditional courtyard layouts, old canteens, and the iconic red-brick Soviet-style buildings that defined that period.
As a focal point of China's Reform and Opening-up, this historic community has successfully undergone a remarkable urban renewal project, skillfully blending its rich industrial heritage with modern commercial vitality.
Today, these vintage structures stand harmoniously alongside trendy cafes and boutiques, vividly telling the story of the nation's profound socio-economic transformation.
It offers visitors a unique window into the past, perfectly showcasing the evolution from a traditional industrial community to a vibrant, modern commercial hub.
