Very few city like Shanghai epitomizes the highly complicated, sometimes cruel but overall epic modern history of China and even the entire Far East. So join me for two of most typical sites who may not be that touristically mainstream but is rich in historical attraction: Shanghai Jewish Refugee Commeration Muesum and Sihang Warehouse. Both of them largely preserve the historical trauma and specualtion in very down to earth fashion, and linking them is the equally legendary Suzhou Creek...

09:30 AM

Meeting Point

Exit 2 of Tilanqiao Metro Station (of Metro Line 12)

- The guide will wait for you at the very entrance of the museum and which is walking distance from the Exit 2 of Tilanqiao Metro Station (of Line 12)

10:00 AM

Shanghai Jewish Refugee Commeration Muesum

The Shanghai Jewish Refugees Commeration Musuem and its adjacent area stands as the remnant of one piece of gloomy yet fascinating history. I have a series of stories, insights you may never read from those mainstream tourism brochures. Let's explore and imagine over the ruins of the shadow of that foregone "Little Vienna" as well as the cities' most hustling working class fortification. From an unapologetic native perspective, I will show you the viccitudes this part of city has undergone

12:00 AM

Sihang Warehouse

Sihang Warehouse was once the focus of international community during the fierce Second Battle of Shanghai in August 1937 and it is now engraved as a consecrate landmark of the Chinese resilience in its greatest existential crisis. Outside the museum is the iconic Suzhou Creek that witnesses this city's early industrialization and internationalization effort. One river, stages all the extremities of the dazzling history Shanghai has lived through in the span of a century. History is no more theatrical than this.

11:30 AM

Xiahai Temple (Optional)

In a walking distance from the Musuem is this overlooked Buddish temple, thanks to her relatively low profile, it is not touristic and I invite you take a closer look at some stunning Buddhist sculptures and everyday Chinese Buddihst practice. Besides, if you are into ubran exploration, the entire Tilanqiao neighborhood is there for your taking, that legendary prison, and blocks of empty houses bracing silently and mysteriously for the ever eluding demolition. Admission fee is RMB 5. And we won't stop there for too long.

02:00 PM

Suzhou Creek Promenade

We could take a stroll alongside the Suzhou Creek after our visit to the Sihang Warehouse Memorial Museum which will stun you with its recreation of historical gravity, the breeze over Suzhou Creek also sends you a variety of emotions and insights because alongside what we locals call the Mother River of Shanghai lie a run of magnificent historical buildings that witness the city and the country's complicated effort of industrialization and internationalization.
