The Monastery of Saint Anthony
Arrive to The Monastery of Saint Anthony is one of the oldest and most significant Coptic Christian monasteries, located in the Eastern Desert of Egypt. It is historically important because it is the burial site of Saint Anthony, the founder of Christian monasticism, and a place of pilgrimage for many throughout history. The monastery, founded in the 4th century, has been remarkably well-preserved and retains much of its historical and spiritual significance.
Inside the monastery, you can find ancient, well-preserved medieval paintings that depict various religious scenes and figures, showcasing the unique style of early Christian Egyptian art. These paintings, along with the monastery's ancient manuscripts housed in the library, are invaluable resources for understanding the history of Christianity in Egypt, monastic life, and early Christian theology.
The library contains rare manuscripts, many of which are written in Coptic, Greek, and Arabic, reflecting the intellectual and spiritual traditions of the early monastic community. These texts cover a wide range of theological, philosophical, and liturgical topics, offering insight into the religious and cultural life of the period.
The monastery is a place of tranquility and reflection, nestled in the rugged mountains of the desert, and remains a center for Coptic Christian monasticism to this day.
St. Paul's Monastery
St. Paul's Monastery, located in the Egyptian desert near the Red Sea, is built over the cave where Saint Paul the Hermit lived in the 4th century. A legend tells that ravens brought him bread to sustain him during his solitary life of asceticism, and after his death at 105, lions are said to have dug his grave. The monastery, a testament to early Christian monasticism, features ancient buildings, frescoes, and artifacts reflecting Egypt’s Christian heritage. Despite Egypt’s Islamic identity today, this site preserves its Christian legacy, blending spiritual history with cultural heritage. It remains an active monastic site and a serene destination for pilgrims and visitors.
