Located near Mahalaxmi Station in Mumbai, Dhobi Ghat is the world’s largest open-air laundry, where hundreds of washermen and women—known as dhobis—work every day. This place has been running for more than a hundred years and is an important part of Mumbai’s daily life.
Here, clothes from hotels, hospitals, and homes across the city are washed by hand, dried in the open sun, and ironed before being returned. You’ll see rows of concrete wash pens, each fitted with its own flogging stone, where dhobis beat and scrub clothes with great skill and speed.
