Mulagandha Kuti Vihar- Home to Buddha's Sacred Tooth Relic

s we step into the peaceful complex of Mulagandha Kuti Vihar, you are walking into a space filled with profound spiritual energy. Built in 1931 by the Maha Bodhi Society, this modern temple stands as a magnificent monument to the revival of Buddhism in Sarnath.

The true spiritual heart of this temple lies in its inner sanctuary, which houses the exceptionally rare and sacred relics (bone and tooth fragments) of Gautama Buddha, recovered during historical excavations. Standing here, surrounded by the gentle fragrance of incense, you can truly feel the echoes of ancient devotion.

As you look around the walls, you will see a visual masterpiece: breathtaking, life-like frescoes painted by the famous Japanese artist Kosetsu Nosu. These vibrant murals beautifully narrate the entire life journey of Prince Siddhartha—from his birth, his renunciation, and his enlightenment, right up to his Mahaparinirvana.

Every evening, the air here resonates with the soul-stirring chanting of the Dhammacakkappavattana Sutta—the very first sermon Buddha gave just a few meters away. Outside, you can sit beneath the sacred Bodhi tree, grown from a sapling of the Sri Lankan tree that traces its roots directly back to the original tree under which Buddha achieved enlightenment. Take a moment here to breathe in the absolute peace."

10:20 AM

Bodhi Tree -The Living Symbol of Enlightenment

As we stand before this magnificent, spreading Bodhi Tree, we are looking at a living bridge that connects us directly to the moment of Gautama Buddha’s ultimate awakening.

While Buddha attained enlightenment under the original Mahabodhi tree in Bodh Gaya, the history of this specific tree in Sarnath is deeply profound. Emperor Ashoka's daughter, Sanghamitta, took a cutting of that original sacred tree from India to Sri Lanka in the 3rd century BC, where it flourished. Centuries later, in the 1930s, a sapling from that very tree in Sri Lanka was brought right back here to Sarnath by Anagarika Dharmapala and planted where you see it standing today.

So, when you look at these shimmering heart-shaped leaves, you are looking at the direct lineage—the exact DNA—of the tree that sheltered the Buddha over 2,500 years ago.

Take a moment to listen to the gentle rustle of the leaves. In Buddhist tradition, the Bodhi tree represents the ultimate potential within all of us to wake up, to find clarity, and to overcome suffering. It is said that meditating or simply sitting in its shade brings a deep sense of inner peace. Let's take a quiet minute here to breathe in this tranquil energy and appreciate the timeless roots of peace surrounding us."

11:20 AM

Dhamek Stupa _ Where the Wheel of Dharma Began to Turn

After experiencing the peaceful shade of the Bodhi Tree, we have now arrived at our 3rd major stop, and truly the spiritual crown of Sarnath: The Magnificent Dhamek Stupa.

Look at the sheer scale of this monument. Standing a massive 43 meters high and nearly 28 meters wide, this colossal structure is one of the most sacred Buddhist sites in the entire world. Why? Because this very ground marks the exact, historical spot where Gautama Buddha delivered his very first sermon—known as the Dhammacakkappavattana Sutta—to his first five disciples over 2,500 years ago.

In spiritual terms, this is the precise place where the 'Wheel of Dharma' was set into motion. This is where Buddhism was born as a global philosophy.

As we walk closer, I want you to notice the beautiful, intricate geometric patterns and floral carvings wrapped around the stone base. These date back to the golden Gupta Empire of the 5th century. For centuries, kings, monks, and seekers from all over the world have come here to circumambulate (walk around) this stupa in deep meditation. As we do the same, take a moment to absorb the powerful, ancient energy of this sacred ground."

12:00 PM

arnath Archaeological Museum:

After walking among the spiritual ruins outside, we are now entering our final stop: The Sarnath Archaeological Museum. Established in 1910, this is actually the oldest site museum of the Archaeological Survey of India, and it holds the physical soul of ancient Sarnath.

Everything you will see inside was excavated right from the grounds we just walked on. As we enter the main hall, you will come face-to-face with a piece of history that every Indian recognizes: The Lion Capital of Ashoka. Carved from a single block of sandstone in the 3rd century BC by Emperor Ashoka, these four magnificent lions facing four directions represent the power and spread of Buddha’s teachings. Today, this very sculpture is the National Emblem of India, and the wheel at its base—the Ashok Chakra—is at the center of the Indian flag.

As we move deeper into the galleries, I want to show you another masterpiece that art lovers and seekers travel across the world to see: The Seated Buddha in preaching mudra. Carved during the golden Gupta period (5th century AD), this sculpture depicts Buddha with a uniquely calm, meditative smile and downcast eyes, capturing the absolute essence of inner peace and supreme wisdom.

Walking through these galleries isn't just a history lesson; it’s a silent meditation. You will see how artists from thousands of years ago managed to carve deep spiritual energy, compassion, and peace into solid stone. Let's explore these ancient treasures together."

12:40 PM

Lunch Break - Savor the Flavors of Varanasi

Time to rest and refuel! We will take a relaxing break at a handpicked local restaurant to enjoy a delicious, authentic lunch. It’s the perfect opportunity to chat, share stories, and taste some of the wonderful flavors of the region before we continue our journey.

01:00 AM

Golden Temple in Sarnath_ A Haven of Thai Devotion

As we enter the gates of the Golden Temple, also known as Wat Thai Sarnath, you will immediately feel a shift in atmosphere. This beautiful complex transport us straight to Thailand, showcasing how deeply Sarnath resonates across the global Buddhist community.

As you look up, notice the striking Thai architecture with its characteristic multi-tiered slanting roofs, elegant golden spires, and the traditional Chofa ornaments pointing toward the sky. Guarding the entrance are magnificent, colorful Naga (dragon) statues, which in Buddhist lore act as sacred protectors of the Dharma.

The undisputed centerpiece of this serene complex is the colossal standing Buddha statue, soaring nearly 80 feet into the air. Take a close look at his hands—he is depicted in a mudra (gesture) that radiates protection and fearlessness.

Let's walk through the beautifully manicured, peaceful gardens. This temple was built by Thai devotees to offer a home away from home for pilgrims coming from Southeast Asia, making it a living symbol of international brotherhood and shared spiritual devotion. Take a moment here to absorb the absolute silence, interrupted only by the gentle rustle of leaves and the distant sound of prayer bells."
