As you may know, Tokyo was severely damaged in the last century. A major earthquake and war time bombings almost completely destroyed the historical appearance of the city. In this tour I would like to invite you to visit a small corner on the outskirts of the Japanese capital that has remained untouched and has retained its unique atmosphere.
Tokyo Station (Marunouchi)
I recommend to meet up by the historical side of Tokyo station, but let's discuss your hotel location so we could find a more convenient place to start our tour.
Shibamata is a small neighborhood in Tokyo on the border with Chiba Prefecture. This area is very picturesque and very popular among Japanese elderly people who find a visit to Shibamata an opportunity to return to the days of their younger years.
We will stroll down a very atmospheric shopping street where local delicacies and traditional sweets are being sold. The area is famous for its restaurants offering Unagi, (freshwater eel)
This Buddhist temple has a long history and despite the fact that it is not the oldest structure in the city it has well survived the troubles of the 21st century with its beautiful carvings, which makes it perhaps one of the most interesting old temples in the city.
Japanese gardens are beautiful and a visiting of this garden with its tranquil atmosphere, singing birds and a cup of hot green tea will remain in your memory for a long time.
Shibamata offers us a special insight into the city's history. Here we will go back to the time when Japan first opened up to the Western world and see how the Western way of life gradually found its way into the lives of Japan's elites. There is also a beautiful garden with ornamental koi carps where you can enjoy traditional desserts and matcha chai sitting on traditional tatami mats.
Shibamata is known as the location of one of the all-time favorite Japanese series Otoko wa Tsurai yo (男はつらいよ, "It's tough being a man") That movie greatly adds to the popularity of the area and you can see cosplayers here in the guise of the main character of that saga. This interactive museum gives guests the opportunity to enjoy scenes and interiors of post-war Japan and will be of interest to many lovers of old movies and atmospheric photographs.
Tour is over. It is easy to reach Asakusa or Ginza Yanaka on the way back to Tokyo
