Meeting Point
Andong Train Station
- Other options can be arranged: Andong Bus Terminal/ Guest's Hotel in Andong City Andong is conveniently located just 1 hour and 55 minutes from Seoul’s Cheongnyangni Station by KTX, about 2 hours from Busan’s Bujeon Station, and approximately 45 minutes from Gyeongju. For the best experience, I recommend staying overnight in Andong. You can enjoy the breathtaking night view of Woryeonggyo Bridge, one of Korea’s most beautiful illuminated wooden bridges, and then spend the following day exploring Andong’s UNESCO World Heritage sites and cultural treasures. This combination offers one of the most rewarding cultural experiences in Korea. I will meet you either in the main waiting hall of Andong Station or at your hotel in Andong. For an even more memorable experience, I highly recommend staying in a traditional Korean hanok. A hanok stay is one of the best ways to experience Korea’s architectural heritage, culture, and traditional way of life while visiting Andong.
Bongjeongsa Temple
Bongjeongsa Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site included in the “Sansa, Buddhist Mountain Monasteries in Korea,” is home to Geungnakjeon Hall, the oldest surviving wooden building in Korea. Although modest in scale, the temple is often described as a living museum of Korean architecture, preserving structures from the Goryeo Dynasty through the Joseon Dynasty.
One of the highlights of the visit is comparing Geungnakjeon Hall, dedicated to Amitabha Buddha, with Daeungjeon Hall, dedicated to Shakyamuni Buddha. Their architectural styles clearly reveal the transition from Goryeo Buddhist architecture to the more restrained and refined style of the early Joseon period. Through these buildings, visitors can gain a deeper understanding of how Korean architecture evolved over centuries.
Another hidden gem is Yeongsanam Hermitage, a beautiful late-Joseon complex famous as a filming location for Korean movies and television dramas. Its elegant courtyards, wooden halls, stone walls, and natural surroundings create one of the most picturesque settings in Korea.
Nestled deep in the mountains and harmoniously integrated with nature, Bongjeongsa reflects the Korean ideal of living in balance with the natural world. A peaceful walk through the temple grounds offers a unique opportunity to experience the serenity, simplicity, and aesthetic beauty that have shaped Korean culture for centuries.
Buyongdae Observatory
Buyongdae Cliff offers the best panoramic view of Hahoe Folk Village and is the perfect place to understand why this UNESCO World Heritage Site is so special. From the cliff, visitors can clearly see the Nakdong River curving around the village, which explains the name “Hahoe,” meaning “a village embraced by water.” The name Buyongdae, or “Lotus Flower Viewing Cliff,” comes from the belief that the village resembles a lotus flower floating on the river.
More than 600 years ago, the Ryu clan selected this site and planned the village according to the principles of Korean feng shui. Surrounded by mountains and water, Hahoe was designed as a harmonious and prosperous community for future generations. From Buyongdae, visitors can see the sacred Samsindang Tree at the highest point of the village and understand how houses and alleys were arranged in harmony with the natural landscape.
The view also reveals the social structure of Joseon society. The tiled-roof residences of aristocratic yangban families stand alongside the thatched-roof homes of commoners. While social status was clearly visible, the village developed as a cooperative community where traditions and festivals were shared by all
From the cliff, visitors can also see the riverside area associated with Seonyu Julbul Nori, a traditional firework festival enjoyed by the aristocracy. Together with the famous Hahoe Mask Dance, these traditions demonstrate the unique relationship between the village’s elite and commoner
Byeongsan Seowon
Byeongsan Seowon is one of Korea’s most beautiful Confucian academies and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Founded during the Joseon Dynasty, it was a center of learning where scholars studied Neo-Confucian philosophy, the ideology that shaped Korean education, government, and family values for more than 500 years.
The academy is closely associated with Ryu Seong-ryong, one of Korea’s greatest scholars and statesmen. As Prime Minister during the Japanese invasions of the 16th century, he played a key role in defending the nation and later recorded the lessons of the war in his famous book, *Jingbirok*.
What makes Byeongsan Seowon truly special is its harmony with nature. Surrounded by mountains and overlooking the Nakdong River, the academy reflects the Confucian belief that learning should take place in a peaceful natural environment.
The highlight is Mandae Pavilion, an elegant wooden hall offering breathtaking views of the river and Byeongsan Mountain. Standing here, visitors can imagine the scholars who once gathered to study, discuss philosophy, and cultivate their character.
More than a historic building, Byeongsan Seowon offers a deeper understanding of the values and traditions that shaped Korean society for centuries.
Hahoe Mask Museum
The Hahoe Mask Museum provides a fascinating introduction to one of Korea’s most distinctive cultural traditions. Located near Hahoe Folk Village, the museum houses thousands of masks from Korea and around the world, showcasing how masks have been used in religious rituals, festivals, theater, and community life across different cultures.
The museum’s most important collection is the famous Hahoe masks, which are closely connected to the Hahoe Byeolsingut Mask Dance, a UNESCO-recognized cultural heritage tradition. Unlike performances that celebrated the ruling class, these mask dances used humor, satire, and storytelling to criticize corrupt officials, arrogant aristocrats, and even Buddhist monks. Through laughter and performance, ordinary people could express opinions that would otherwise have been difficult to voice in a highly structured society.
Each mask represents a unique character with its own personality, social status, and symbolic meaning. The expressions, shapes, and movements of the masks reveal insights into Korean values, human relationships, and everyday life during the Joseon Dynasty.
By visiting the museum, travelers gain a deeper understanding of the cultural background of Hahoe Folk Village and the traditions that have been preserved for centuries. More than a collection of artifacts, the Hahoe Mask Museum offers a window into the creativity, humor, and wisdom of traditional Korean society.
Hahoe Markert Restaurant
Hahoe Marketplace offers a glimpse into the local culture and daily life of Andong. Visitors can browse traditional snacks, local specialties, handicrafts, and souvenirs while experiencing the relaxed atmosphere of a Korean village market. It is also a great place to sample Andong’s famous regional foods and connect with the living traditions of the area.
Hahoe Mask Dance Theater
The Hahoe Byeolsingut Mask Dance is one of Korea’s most famous traditional folk performances and is recognized as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage. For centuries, this unique performance has combined music, dance, humor, and satire to tell stories about everyday life in Korean society.
Unlike performances that praised the ruling class, the mask dance allowed ordinary people to laugh at and criticize arrogant aristocrats, corrupt officials, and even Buddhist monks. Through humor and wit, it became a way for people to express social concerns while strengthening community bonds.
Each mask represents a different character, and the lively performances reveal the humor, wisdom, and creativity of traditional Korean culture. Visitors can enjoy colorful costumes, energetic dances, and entertaining stories that remain relevant even today.
The newly renovated Hahoe Mask Dance Theater provides a comfortable all-weather venue for visitors. Air conditioning keeps the theater cool during the hot summer months, while heating ensures a pleasant experience in winter. Thanks to these modern facilities, the performance continues to be one of the most popular attractions for visitors exploring Hahoe Folk Village.
More than a cultural performance, the Hahoe Byeolsingut Mask Dance offers a unique opportunity to experience the spirit, humor, and living traditions of Korea.
Hahoe Folk Village
Hahoe Folk Village is Korea’s most famous traditional village and a UNESCO World Heritage Site where people still live today. Unlike reconstructed villages, Hahoe has remained home to the descendants of the Ryu clan for more than 600 years, preserving the traditions and values of Confucian society.
The village takes its name from the Nakdong River, which flows around it in a graceful curve. “Hahoe” means “a village embraced by water,” and its location reflects the principles of Korean feng shui. Surrounded by mountains and protected by the river, the village was carefully planned as a place where generations could live and prosper.
Walking through Hahoe, visitors can see the social structure of the Joseon Dynasty. Elegant tiled-roof residences of the aristocratic yangban class stand alongside the thatched-roof homes of commoners. Although social distinctions existed, the village developed as a cooperative community where traditions and festivals were shared by all.
Hahoe is also famous for its cultural heritage, including the Hahoe Byeolsingut Mask Dance and Seonyu Julbul Nori, a traditional riverside fire festival. These traditions reveal the humor, creativity, and community spirit that sustained village life for centuries.
More than a historic village, Hahoe is a living cultural landscape. Walking through its winding alleys offers a rare opportunity to experience the roots of Korean culture and the values that continue to influence Korea today.
Woryeonggyo Bridge
Woryeonggyo Bridge is one of Andong’s most beloved landmarks and the longest wooden pedestrian bridge in Korea. Built as a symbol of love and devotion, the bridge spans the Nakdong River and is especially beautiful in the evening when its lights are reflected on the water.
Nearby, visitors can enjoy the Nakgang Mulgil Park, a peaceful riverside park known for its seasonal flowers, illuminated pathways, and tranquil atmosphere. The park has become one of Andong’s most popular evening destinations, offering excellent opportunities for photography and relaxation.
The adjacent Folk Museum provides valuable insight into the daily lives, customs, and traditions of ordinary Koreans during the Joseon Dynasty. Through traditional houses, artifacts, and exhibits, visitors can gain a deeper understanding of Korea’s cultural heritage and rural way of life.
Together, Woryeonggyo Bridge, Nakgang Mulgil Park, and the Folk Museum offer a unique combination of history, culture, and natural beauty. During the day, the area provides a pleasant riverside walk, while at night it transforms into one of the most picturesque locations in Andong.
Visitors wishing to experience the spectacular night view of Woryeonggyo Bridge may choose to stay overnight in Andong or arrange an extended touring time with the guide. Please discuss available options in advance if you would like to include the evening illumination in your itinerary. After 6 pm, you have to pay 30,000 krw per hour.
