Kirtipur, located just 5 kilometers southwest of Kathmandu, is one of the oldest and most culturally rich towns in Nepal. It holds a special place in Nepali history due to its strong association with Newari culture and its role in resisting Gorkha King Prithvi Narayan Shah’s unification campaign in the 18th century. Visitors are drawn to Kirtipur not only for its historical significance but also for its captivating views of the Kathmandu Valley and its well-preserved traditional Newari architecture. The ancient Bagh Bhairab temple, known for its terracotta art and weapon collections, and the Uma Maheshwar temple, which offers a spectacular view of the valley and the mountains, are two must-visit sites in the town.

Budhanilkantha Temple

Here rests Vishnu (Narayan) Jalasayana, a deity of Lord Vishnu, who is reclining on Ananta Sesa in the cosmic ocean. The Deity is more than a millennium old. With His legs crossed, Lord Vishnu, who is around 5 meters (17 feet) in length, is floating in a tank that is 13 meters (43 feet) long.

With over 25 years of experience, I’ve led countless adventurers through iconic routes like Everest Base Camp, Annapurna Circuit, Langtang Valley, Upper Mustang, Manaslu Circuit, Kanchenjunga, and Dhaulagiri. I also specialize in peak climbing expeditions below 7,000 meters—such as Island Peak, Mera Peak, Lobuche East, and Chulu peaks.
