Spices were of paramount importance at every stage of Singapore’s history, from being traded during the famous spice rush, to their use in modern Singapore’s famous street food. In this fun and interactive tour we will visit many of the highlights of Singapore city, following our noses and taste buds as we track the development of the city from ancient times to now, and learn about the diverse people that settled here from all over the world.

Meeting Point
Fort Canning Hill Park
- We meet at Fort Canning Park to start our tour at the spice garden on this famous hill that sits at the center of historic Singapore, where we will see the plants that made the region famous and discuss Singapore’s role in world history.
Singapore River
From Fort Canning it is a short stroll to the Singapore river where I will bring the old days back to life with stories of the trading port that was started here by the 19th century settlers from Britain, China, Malaya and beyond.
Kampong Gelam
This seat of the late Sultan of Singapore was already a port town before the British arrived. Many Muslim traders settled here from the Malay archipelago, India and the Middle East, creating a cosmopolitan trading hub to rival the European port - and one much more colourful and fragrant!
Little India
We will head over to the top spot for spices in Singapore: Little India, with its spice shops, stalls of colourful wares and myriad of restaurants serving fragrant dishes rich in flavour and, if you like, spicy heat!
Ending Point
Little India MRT station

My name is Karien, a writer and tour guide from Singapore. I love stories, either written or spoken, and bring guests to popular hotspots or off the beaten track hidden gems – as my tours are private and curated the choice is yours! Singapore is a multicultural melting pot and its history and culture delves a lot deeper than most visitors (or even residents) are aware of.
Singapore’s vibrant population from different background suits me perfectly, as I myself come from multiple cultures. Born from Dutch parents I have lived in many countries since birth, including Malaysia, Indonesia, the Middle East, and Europe. I have called Singapore home since 2012.
My tours are themed and show you the history and development of our small island in a fun and interactive way. Tours itineraries are flexible, half or full day, by public transport or private transport – all depending on your wishes and budget. My expertise lies in Malay and colonial history, nature, the development of Singapore and its different cultures, and above all: spices!
