- There are multiple Black and White estates in Singapore, and for this tour we can either do a longer walking tour and really discover one area in-depth, or visit several to get an overview of the different estates. The below itinerary are examples of the places we can visit, we don't have to cover all. Please contact me to develop your own itinerary.
Alexandra Park military houses
Follow me on a stroll along the lush hills of Alexandra Park, a unique area that you can't see anywhere else in Singapore. The houses here belonged to staff of the British military. We see how they lived, discuss what their lives look like, and delve into the military history of the British in Singapore and the Indian mutiny that took place here.
Adam Park WW2 history
The colonial houses in Adam Park were built for civil servants, and apart from this being a beautiful area to learn how people lived here a century ago, the area is famous for it's war history and was the site of a veritable WW2 battle. Just behind the Adam Park houses is the Sime Road military camp where the civilian internees were held in the war, and we will get a chance to see the headquarters of the joint military British forces, where many of the bad decisions were made that led to the fall of Singapore.
Keppel Harbour Black and White Houses
All the houses here are linked to Keppel Harbour, and are beautifully strewn across the foothills of Mount Faber and Bukit Chermin. We can visit the houses up close and learn about their inhabitants and the jobs they did in the nearby harbour.
Goodwood Hill
The Goodwill Hill houses were built for the judiciary, and the area boasts some of the finest examples of early 20th century architecture. The popular tropical mock-tudor style combined a traditional British style with local Malay influences, making for a beautiful fusion effect.
