The Gothic quarter, also called "ciutat vella", the old town in Catalan, is the historic center of Barcelona. Its history starts in 15 A.C. when the Romans decided to build a fortified city, called Barcino. Since then its fortified walls have protected the seats of political and religious power as well as the homes of wealthy traders who could afford this luxury. The Gothic quarter is the location of many of Barcelona's historic and emblematic monuments, which you will discover.
