This tour explores Tajikistan from Dushanbe to the Pamir Mountains, passing historic sites, ancient fortresses, and traditional villages. You will travel along the scenic Panj River and Pamir Highway, visiting Hulbuk Fortress, Vrang Stupa, Yamchun Fortress, and natural wonders like Bibi Fatima Hot Springs, Bulunkul and Yashilkul Lakes, and Karakul Lake. The journey includes high mountain passes, breathtaking landscapes, and authentic local culture and hospitality.

Meeting Point
Hotel
- We will start the tour at the hotel that you will stay. Transfer to your hotel from the airport and to the airport after the culmination of the tour is included.
Day 1/ Dushanbe
- Arrival in the early morning in Dushanbe.
- Transfer to the hotel for check-in and rest after the journey.
City sightseeing tour of Dushanbe covering key attractions: the Archeological Museum, local bazaar, Cathedral Mosque, Navruz Palace teahouse, Hissar Fortress, Flagpole Park, and the central square.
- Overnight accommodation included: Hotel Taj (4-star) – USD 80.
Day 2. Dushanbe - Kalai Khum
- Departure from Dushanbe**
- The journey starts from Dushanbe heading toward the magnificent Pamir Mountains, following the scenic course of the Panj River through some of the country’s most beautiful landscapes.
- On the way, a visit is made to the 9th-century Hulbuk Fortress and the Hulbuk Museum, offering valuable insight into the region’s historical and cultural heritage.
- The route continues with wide panoramic mountain views and unique sights of traditional Afghan villages located across the river.
- During the drive, you will also meet local residents and experience their warm hospitality and traditional way of life.
- Overnight stay included: Local guesthouse (USD 40, no star rating).
Day 3. Kalai Khum - Khorog
- Scenic journey from Kalai Khumb to Khorog (280 km, around 7 hours), passing through one of the most beautiful sections of the Pamir Highway.
- The route runs alongside the Panj River, offering dramatic mountain landscapes and views of traditional Afghan villages on the opposite side.
- In the evening, enjoy a relaxing walk in Khorog Park, a quiet green area popular with local residents.
- Overnight accommodation included: Lal Hotel (3-star) – USD 70.
Day 4. Khorog - Bibi Fotima Hot Spring
- After breakfast in Khorog, departure toward the famous Garmchashma Hot Springs, surrounded by impressive mountain scenery. The route continues to Ishkashim, a small town at the entrance of the historic Wakhan Corridor, once an important route during the 19th-century Great Game.
- En route, visit the ruins of Kakh-Kakha Fortress (4th century AD), a relic of the Kushan era. The drive follows the northern bank of the Panj River, offering wide panoramic views of the Pamir Mountains. As we enter the Wakhan Valley, spectacular scenery unfolds with the Pamirs on one side and the Hindu Kush on the other, and the towering Karl Marx Peak (6,723 m) visible in the distance.
- Continue to Vrang village to explore the ancient Vrang Stupa (4th–7th century), a multi-level stone structure overlooking the Panj River. This site is part of a Buddhist complex with caves and ruins, surrounded by local legends about the Buddha’s footprint.
- The journey proceeds to Yamchun Fortress, dramatically located above the valley and known as one of the most impressive historical sites in the region. Afterwards, relax at the Bibi Fotima Hot Springs, famous for their mineral-rich waters and peaceful setting.
- Overnight stay included: Local guesthouse (USD 40, no star rating).
Day 5. Bibi Fotima Hot Spring - Bulunkul - Alichur
- The journey continues toward Bulunkul, crossing the high-altitude Khargush Pass (4,344 m), one of the sources of the Amu Darya River. The route offers dramatic views of rugged mountain landscapes and untouched alpine scenery.
- From the pass, enjoy panoramic views of Lake Bulunkul. Nearby lie Yashil-Kul (entrance fee not included) and Bulunkul Lakes, often called the “Blue Lakes,” situated at around 3,700 m in the Murghab region. These remote lakes are known for their clear waters and rich fish population, representing one of the most beautiful natural highlights of the area.
- Along the way, there is a chance to observe yaks, well-adapted to high-altitude conditions. These animals are essential to local communities, providing milk, meat, and transport, and reflecting the traditional lifestyle of the Pamir people.
- Time is allocated for walking around the lakes, photography, and enjoying the quiet mountain environment. Later, the drive continues to Alichur village, passing Tuzkul (Salt Lake) and Sasikul, also known as the “Stinky Lake.”
- Overnight stay included: Guesthouse in Alichur village (USD 40, no star rating).
Day 6. Alichur - Jarti Gumbez
- Drive to Jarty Gumbez (Dzharty-Gumbez), a remote high-altitude settlement located at 4,130 meters above sea level. The route passes through dramatic and colorful mountain landscapes, offering excellent opportunities for photography and breathtaking alpine views.
- This isolated destination is known for its natural sulfur hot springs, an old cemetery, and its location near a traditional hunting camp base, making it particularly attractive for adventure travelers and trekking enthusiasts.
- Overnight stay included: Local guesthouse with hot spring pools (USD 50, no star rating).
Day 7. Jarti Gumbez - Murgab
- The journey continues toward Murghab, crossing a vast high-altitude plateau. En route, we pass the abandoned Soviet-era Shorbulak (Shor-Buloq) - Observatory, located between Jarty Gumbez and Murghab. On clear days, it is possible to see distant views of Muztagh Ata (7,509 m), one of China’s highest peaks, rising on the horizon and emphasizing the vast scale of the Eastern Pamirs.
- Along the way, we visit Shakhty Cave, home to some of the oldest rock paintings in Central Asia, dating back to the 8th–5th millennium BCE. These red ochre drawings depict hunting scenes with human and animal figures, providing rare insight into the life and beliefs of early communities in the region.
- Upon arrival in Murghab, enjoy a short walk around the town, including visits to the local mosque and the unique bazaar, built from converted shipping containers.
- Overnight stay included: Pamir Hotel (3-star) – USD 50.
Day 8. Murgab - Karakul
- Drive to Karakul Lake (Black Lake), heading toward the Tajik–Kyrgyz border and crossing the high-altitude Khushang Pass (formerly Ak-Baital Pass) at 4,655 meters. This is one of the highest drivable mountain passes in the world and the highest in the former Soviet Union. The route offers dramatic alpine scenery with vast mountain ranges and distant views toward the Chinese border.
- Upon arrival at Karakul, take a short walk along the western shoreline and hike a nearby hill to enjoy panoramic views of the lake. In clear weather, the impressive Abuali Ibni Sino Peak (7,134 m) can be seen on the horizon.
- Later, explore Karakul Village and walk along the lakeside, enjoying the peaceful atmosphere and crisp high-mountain air.
- Overnight stay included: Erkin Guesthouse (USD 40, no star rating).
Day 9. Karakul - Khorog
We begin our journey to Khorog, retracing the route we took to Karakul Lake. After a lunch stop in Murgab, we cross Koitezek Pass at 4,271 m, where otherworldly, lunar-like landscapes stretch across the horizon, offering a breathtaking glimpse of the wild eastern Pamirs.
- Next, we travel through the Gund (Gunt) Valley to Khorog, winding past mountain villages and scenic river valleys. After descending from the high Pamir plateau, the 230 km stretch to Khorog is relatively straightforward, offering stunning landscapes and passing by the Jelondi hot springs.
- Accommodation: Hotel Lal.
Day 10. Khorog - Kalay Khum
- We start our drive early in the morning, following the already familiar landscapes along the scenic Panj River on our way to Kalay Khum.
- Accommodation: Local guesthouse.
Day 11. Kalay Khum - Dushanbe
- As we return to Dushanbe, we will take a different route through the beautiful Rasht Valley. This region is known for its green valleys, mountain villages, and the flowing Surkhob River that runs through the valley. The area was historically part of ancient trade routes and today it offers a great opportunity to see traditional rural life and some of the most scenic landscapes in Tajikistan.
- Farewell dinner in Dushanbe.
- Accommodation: Taj Palace.
