Khor Virap Monastery
Khor Virap is a historic 7th-century Armenian monastery, renowned as the site where St. Gregory the Illuminator was imprisoned for 13 years before converting King Tiridates III to Christianity in 301 AD. It serves as a major pilgrimage site, offering stunning close-up views of Mount Ararat and featuring a deep, accessible underground pit.
Areni 1 Cave (Bird's Cave)
Areni-1 Cave lies in Armenia’s southern Vayots Dzor region, close to the village of Areni and the road leading to Noravank Monastery. Archaeologists working here uncovered the earliest known winery complex and a leather shoe dating back around 5,500 years. Other discoveries provide a detailed picture of the food, crafts and ritual practices of communities that lived in the Arpa River valley over several historical periods.
Noravank Monastery
Noravank means “New Monastery” in Armenian. The beautiful Noravank Monastery was built in the 13th century on the ledge of narrow winding gorge above the Amaghu River, near the city of Yeghegnadzor. The spare lines of the church contrast beautifully with the sharp red rock cliffs, and the dramatic scenery is one of the best reasons to visit Noravank.
