Built by the Shirvanshah dynasty (kingdom) between the 12th and 15th centuries, this well-preserved palace is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The Palace ensemble consists of 9 buildings:
The Central Palace,
The Divankhane (Court –House),
The Dervish's Mausoleum (Sufi ideas began to permeate Azerbaijan as early as the 10th century, with individuals spreading the mystical teachings of Egyptian Sufism.
By the 13th-15th centuries, various Sufi brotherhoods (tariqas), such as the Suhrawardiyya, Halwatiyya, and Safaviyya, emerged and flourished in Azerbaijan, shaping the region's religious and social life.
Yahya al-Shirvani al-Bakubi (Bakuvi):
A prominent 15th-century Sufi mystic from Shamakhi, he established the Khalwati order and played a vital role in the development of Sufism in the region. )
The Eastern Gate (Portal),
The Key-Qubad mosque,
The Palace Burial-Vault,
The ruins of Hamam (bath-house) and the ovdan (storage lake).
The surrounding divan section (above-mentioned) was used for ceremonies and meetings, housed the divan (council) where state decisions were made.
