One thing that makes Matsuyama Castle so special, is that it is located on
a hilltop and is only accessible by a ropeway with chairlifts or closed capsules
(indispensable for winter!) or on foot. Also, you can access the historical garden in
the middle fortress (ninomaru). Around late March to early April, the 200 cherry trees on
the complex are in full bloom, making this an excellent cherry blossom-viewing spot.
Access to the garden costs an additional 100 yen. Sometimes, events are held such as
night plays of Japanese traditional ‘Noh’ theatre.
