Hongcun is known as "a village in Chinese painting". It's a World Heritage Site. The whole village is laid out like an ox. South Lake and Moon Pond reflect white walls and black tiles, creating amazing ink-wash scenery.

Chengkan, the No.1 village in Jiangnan, follows the Eight Trigrams layout. Baolun Pavilion is famous for delicate wood carvings. Locals say visiting Chengkan brings you a life free from troubles.

Hongcun

Hongcun is a World Cultural Heritage site known as “A Village in Chinese Painting”. It is a well-planned ancient Huizhou village with a unique ox-shaped water system. The village features classic Hui-style architecture with white walls, black tiles and exquisite brick, stone and wood carvings.

At the heart of Hongcun lies Moon Pond, also called Yuezhao. This crescent-shaped pond is the “ox stomach” of the whole water system, built in the Ming Dynasty. The pond was designed as a half moon rather than a full circle, showing ancient wisdom: the moon wanes once full. When the water is calm, the reflections of surrounding Hui-style buildings form a beautiful ink-wash painting.

04:00 PM

Chengkan Village

Chengkan, hailed as the No.1 Village in the South of the Yangtze River, is an ancient Huizhou village with over 1,800 years of history. Built based on the Bagua(Eight Trigrams) layout, it boasts well-preserved Hui-style buildings, fine brick, stone and wood carvings, old ancestral halls and Yongxing Lake. As a local saying goes, “Visit Chengkan, and you will meet no obstacles in life.”

In the evening, we can enjoy the fish lantern parade, a provincial intangible cultural heritage over 600 years old. The lanterns are handmade with bamboo frames and painted paper. In Chinese, "fish" shares the same sound as "surplus", representing wealth and good luck. As night comes, lit fish lanterns travel along old alleys to lively drumbeats. The village turns bustling and amazing. This unique performance can only be seen in Chengkan.
