Shenzhen China Folk Culture Village, ethnic minority costume experience

China covers an area of 9.6 million square kilometers and is home to 56 ethnic groups. Shenzhen China Folk Culture Village, the first ethnic culture-themed park in China, allows you to experience the customs of 21 ethnic minorities in just one day.

Here, 24 villages are restored on a 1:1 scale, including the Dai bamboo houses, Miao stilted buildings, Mongolian yurts, and villages of the Mosuo people who maintain a matriarchal society.

There are also numerous performances: the Dai peacock dance, Tibetan dances, shows by the Wa people who admire black beauty, Mongolian horse-riding displays, and the intangible cultural heritage performance of "Da Ganghua" (pouring molten iron to create sparks like fireworks).

You can also try your hand at traditional crafts of various ethnic groups and taste their unique cuisines. Additionally, many intangible cultural heritage items are showcased here, such as exquisite embroidery, superb silverware, and the papermaking technique of the Naxi people from Yunnan.

It’s a place where you’ll need a whole day to explore, and it’s one of my favorite spots that I highly recommend!

12:00 PM

Lunch:Coconut chicken hotpot

Its uniqueness lies in using fresh coconut water to boil chicken. The sweet aroma of coconut neutralizes the gamey taste of the chicken, resulting in a fresh and sweet flavor. The chicken meat is tender and smooth, and the coconut flesh is crisp. Adding various vegetables and mushrooms enhances the dish even more.

Given the hot weather in Shenzhen, the soup of coconut chicken also has the heat-relieving effect similar to traditional Chinese medicine. With its light taste, rich nutrition and health benefits, it has become one of the most popular dishes in Shenzhen.

01:30 PM

OCT Culture and Creative Park

OCT-LOFT is Shenzhen's earliest cultural and creative industrial park transformed from an old industrial zone, with a history of 20 years to date. It retains the architectural features of the old factories while undergoing artistic and design renovations.

Housing nearly 300 creative companies and art institutions, it also boasts art shops, independent bookstores, hosts jazz music festivals and public art exhibitions, and is home to clothing stores, cafes as well as various Chinese and Western restaurants. It has become one of the favorite leisure spots for both tourists and locals.

03:00 PM

Nanyou clothes Wholesale Marke

Nanyou clothes Wholesale Market is a famous high-end foreign trade clothing wholesale center in China, accounting for 35% of the domestic market share. It covers an area of 500,000 square meters with sales reaching 50 billion yuan. Here, there are original designs, counterfeit famous brands and leftover products of big brands. You can buy clothes with excellent designs at a low price. The market also includes fabric wholesale markets, clothing factories and design studios, offering products such as clothes, shoes, bags and hats.

About Tour Guide Miaomiao W.

I’ve been a licensed English-Japanese tour guide since 2004! I know Shenzhen well—I’ll tell you stories about the "dragon’s sons" on ancient roofs and take you to try high-tech fun like flying cars, drones, humanoid robots, and self-driving taxis, super exciting!

I’m great at shopping too. I know exactly where to go for the best deals: cheap gadgets as gifts, real-looking knockoffs at China’s top high-end clothing market, and 2-carat lab-grown diamonds for just 2000+RMB. You might even find a business chance you didn’t expect.

Need to visit factories? I can help—show you around, assist with negotiations, or find factories if you don’t have one. After the order is set, I’ll follow up on the progress and help arrange shipping. I’ve ordered clothes, jewelries, frames, lens from factories myself, so I’m super experienced and reliable!

I’m flexible, down-to-earth and easy to get along with. I’ll make a customized itinerary fast, no generic cookie-cutter tours—just breathtaking spots tailored just for your taste. Traveling with me is anything but boring, and you won’t need cold translator apps at all. I’ll share your joys and listen to you vent if things go wrong. Your Shenzhen trip will be totally worth it!

Reviews

Can Shenzhen really be more interesting than Beijing or Shanghai? Or is it just that Miaomiao was our guide?

Miaomiao met us in our hotel lobby. Before coming on our trip, she had already planned our itinerary. She had immediately understood what interested us, and the itinerary was perfectly attuned to that. We largely wanted to see modern China, including hi-tech development, and to understand how such a large city could be built in such a short period of time. We visited a building devoted to the display of robot technology — not just two-legged robots like you might picture, but robotic devices designed to automate manufacturing, construction, medicine, etc. We took a look at several brands of Chinese electric cars (very impressive), rode in self-driving taxis, and watched prototype flying cars take off and land (we could have flown one ourselves, but we're a family of cowards). We visited a cultural center and library devoted to design and a designers' "mall" where designers (and tourists) could keep up with the latest developments in plastics, textiles, and other materials, and see both traditional and cutting edge products and designs. We walked through the Dafen Oil Painting Village with street after street of artists creating both reproductions and original artwork, and workshops for aspiring artists, both children and adults. In the same neighborhood was a truly beautiful teahouse housed in what was a centuries-old home. And we walked through the Nantou Ancient City where old homes were turned into modern boutiques and restaurants. And a huge "designer mall" where interior designers and decorators can visit floor after floor of beautiful furniture and furnishings. And then we ran out of time, with so much more we would have liked to see. Through all this, Miaomiao's energy didn't flag. She explained so much of it in flawless English. And she seemed genuinely interested in, and proud of, the places we visited. We recommend Miaomiao highly, and Shenzhen as well.ill likely be visiting in other parts of this amazing country.

Hi Thomas, Thanks a lot for your nice review and kind comments! I truly loved spending time with your whole family. I still remember your great sense of humour, which filled our tour with laughter. I’m happy you loved the itinerary and my introductions. I love and am proud of this place, and hope more people can see how wonderful it is. Great moments always fly by too fast. We didn’t get enough time to explore the furniture market, oil painting wholesale. Hopefully we can make up for these next time. You could even stay for half a month if you get the chance! @_@ It is also good to visit other cities across China, as every destination has its own special charm. I’ll keep checking on the painting progress and send it to you once it’s ready. Hope we meet again soon. Let’s keep in touch! Best, Miaomiao

Great introduction to Shenzhen’s economy and history!

Miaomiao was a great guide for the day! I got a great introduction to the city, we packed a lot in but it never felt rushed. She was great at adapting plans throughout the day based on my interests, energy and the weather. She shared a lot of fascinating professional and personal experience about the city and also was very knowledgeable about its broader economic development and history. Was also very communicative and responsive in the lead up to the tour which made planning easy. Highly recommend!

Hi Katie, Thank you so much for your lovely review and recommendation. I truly appreciate your kind words. That made my day. I really enjoyed showing you around Shenzhen. I know you love museums, so it’s a pity we didn’t get to see the exhibition about China’s economic reform this time. Sometimes leaving a little unfinished makes us look forward to another visit. I hope this trip leaves you with nice memories. I look forward to welcoming you back to explore more of the city someday! Best regards, Miaomiao

4 hours in Shenzhen on a layover

I had almost 9 hours in Shenzhen on my layover to London and decided it would be a good opportunity to see a little bit of Shenzhen. Miaomiao was friendly, knowledgeable and had great energy! I was able to eat delicious Teochew and Cantonese food, I experienced a driverless taxi and my food order delivery by drone and was able to wander through some of the market streets. Getting a taste of the technology, development of the city and culture was a great way to spend a few hours and I would love to come back to explore more. The innovation hub with a Kickstarter presence was fun to browse too. I would highly recommend Miaomiao and her curated tour based on what I wanted to experience. She was able to tell me more about Shenzhen while showing me around. I recommend not using Whats---app to communicate if relying on airport wifi as my messages weren't getting through but we managed to find each other quickly! Thank you Miaomiao!

Hi Emily, thank you so much for your lovely review, it really made my day! I also thoroughly enjoyed showing you around Shenzhen. I still remember that morning when we headed to the market in the urban village. We saw a dazzling variety of fresh produce and bustling locals. Nearby, we stopped at a Teochew breakfast shop and tried authentic seafood breakfast, which was such great value at only 10 RMB. The weather was perfect that day. After the typhoon passed, it wasn’t too hot. It’s a pity our time together was quite short. I hope you can come back to Shenzhen for a dedicated trip someday, to experience more cutting-edge tech and authentic local life. I look forward to welcoming you again! Best regards, Miaomiao
