Four Hours in the Future: Shenzhen's Houhai Tech District
Four hours in the part of Shenzhen that feels like next year. A building that looks like a white cave, a store where you can touch gadgets before they're famous, and a park where your coffee arrives by drone and a robot makes the next one. Then a driverless taxi across Houhai — and we finish at the mall, where lunch and the rest of your afternoon are waiting.

Meeting Point
Meet at Shenzhen University Station, Exit A3
- Line 1, direct from Futian and Luohu.
Driverless taxi to Shenzhen Bay
No warm-up: the first thing we do is get into a car with nobody in the driver's seat. The wheel turns itself, the sensors watch the traffic, and we cross Nanshan in about fifteen minutes. Everyone films this part — you'll want a window seat.
INNO100
Ground floor of the north hall: the first authorised offline store in China for Kickstarter, with more than a hundred brands from around the world. Nothing is behind glass. Strap on an exoskeleton, put on AI glasses that translate in real time, ask a robot to dance. Most of it you can't buy at home yet.
Shenzhen Bay Culture Square
A 188,000-square-metre cultural complex by architect Ma Yansong. From the outside it reads as a white landscape; inside it feels like a cave carved out for people. We walk the atrium, the terraces and the roof — every one of them a photo — and look at whatever exhibition is running. Ten minutes in, you'll understand why locals come here just to photograph the ceiling.
3D printing
A hands-on stop: you draw something small on a tablet, we send it to the printer, and you watch the layers build up in real time. If your design needs longer, we pick it up on the way back to the mall — the route passes the door.
Talent Park: coffee from the sky
The moment we arrive, I place the order. A few minutes later a drone lands at a locker by the lake with your drink — the park is served from a kilometre away, and the flight takes less time than the queue at a café. Next to it, a robot pulls espresso, two minutes a cup. Then the skyline: the 392-metre Spring Bamboo Shoot, the dome of the Spring Cocoon, and a cube-shaped headquarters wrapped in LED screens.
Walk to the MixC
Ten minutes on foot, back past the Culture Square to collect your print if it's ready.
First we step outside for the shot you came for — the Spring Cocoon's dome across the water, the towers behind it. Then lunch: Cantonese, Sichuan, Japanese, or something you've never heard of.
Tour ends at the MixC
Lunch, shopping and the rest of the afternoon are all right here. Houhai Station is underneath the mall.
Ending Point

About Tour Guide Mei L.
Hi there! I've called Shenzhen home for over 25 years — and this city still surprises me every day.
I spent more than a decade with a Fortune 500 company in the IT industry, but my heart has always been in connecting people across cultures. Today, I'm a licensed English tour guide and a Mandarin teacher for international students — combining my deep love for this city with my passion for sharing Chinese culture with visitors from around the world.
Shenzhen isn't just China's tech capital. It's a city of incredible food trails, vibrant markets, and stunning coastal hikes — and I want to show you the real Shenzhen, beyond the guidebooks.
I lived in Hong Kong for two years and volunteered over 200 hours with a Hong Kong-based charity, which deepened my cross-cultural perspective and my commitment to creating meaningful experiences for travelers.
I'm also an amateur photographer, a hiking lover, and a mom of two — which keeps me curious and energetic! Whether you're into street food, tech company visits, coastal walks, or cultural immersion, I'd love to craft a tour just for you.
Let's explore Shenzhen together!

“Perfect Day in Shenzhen”
I genuinely cannot recommend Mei enough!! She was absolutely wonderful and made my time in Shenzhen so special. She was incredibly kind, flexible, and thoughtful about what I wanted to do, and made the entire experience feel less like a tour and more like spending the day exploring the city with a friend! She took me to an amazing jewelry market, as well as a really cool local market and community area that I never would have discovered on my own. I loved getting to experience a more local side of Shenzhen, and she made everything feel so easy, comfortable, and fun. One of my favorite things about traveling is getting to experience places beyond the typical tourist attractions, and Mei really made that possible. I had such a wonderful time with her and would absolutely recommend her to anyone visiting Shenzhen. Thank you so much, Mei!!

Dear Jessica, reading this honestly made my day — thank you so much for such kind words. What you said about it feeling less like a tour and more like spending the day with a friend is exactly what I hope for every time. Every guest comes to Shenzhen with a different picture in their mind of what the city should feel like, and my job — and honestly my favorite part of this work — is figuring out what that picture is and trying to bring it to life. So hearing that I got it right for you means a great deal. And I have to say, the local market and those little neighborhood streets are some of my favorite places in the whole city. Getting to share them with someone who genuinely enjoys that side of travel was such a joy. Thank you for being so open, easygoing, and curious. You made the day easy and fun for me too. If you ever come back to Shenzhen, there's so much more I'd love to show and thank you again, truly.

Thank you so much! It was such a pleasure showing your family around — the mangroves, the bike ride along the bay, and all that amazing food in Shekou. Really appreciate the kind words about my English and the options — it means a lot. If you're ever back in Shenzhen, I'd love to show you more of the city. Safe travels home!
