10:50 AM

YueYang Tower

Upon arriving at the North Gate of Yueyang Tower, you are greeted by a magnificent structure steeped in over a thousand years of Chinese literary and architectural history. Originally built as a military watchtower during the Three Kingdoms period and later immortalized by the Northern Song dynasty poet Fan Zhongyan in his masterpiece Memorial to Yueyang Tower, this iconic pavilion stands proudly on the shores of Lake Dongting, where it meets the Yangtze River. The three-story wooden masterpiece is uniquely constructed entirely without a single nail or beam, featuring a distinctive main roof that resembles a general's helmet. As you step through the entrance, the grand building serves as a breathtaking gateway to panoramic vistas of rolling waves and distant sails, perfectly capturing the ancient Chinese ideal of balancing deep geopolitical concern with a profound appreciation for the beauty of nature.

12:40 PM

Bianhe Street

Dining at Bianhe Street is a culinary journey that beautifully blends rich history with authentic local flavors. Walking down this traditional-style street adjacent to the Yueyang Tower, you are surrounded by ancient architecture, glowing red lanterns, and the irresistible aroma of Hunan cuisine.

Among the countless delicacies, the star of the show is the famous Yueyang Barbecue and the legendary Dongting Lake Duck—whether it is savory braised duck, spicy duck neck, or local specialty duck pots, the meat is incredibly flavorful and tender. Pair these with crispy Changsha stinky tofu, sweet sticky rice cakes (Tangyou Baba), and fresh lake seafood, and you have a feast that perfectly captures the vibrant street food culture of Yueyang right by the scenic lakeside.

01:20 PM

Dongting Lake

Stepping out from Yueyang Tower, you find yourself on the very brink of Dongting Lake, a vast and mythical inland sea that serves as the literal and cultural backdrop to the entire scenic area. As the second-largest freshwater lake in China, its sweeping waters merge seamlessly into the horizon, where the Yangtze River meets the ancient waterways of Hunan. The lake is a living ecosystem of rolling waves, mist-shrouded islands like Junshan, and a bustling parade of local fishing boats and cargo ships. Feeling the fresh, cool breeze straight off the water, you truly understand why generations of poets and scholars were captivated by this immense expanse, making a stroll along its shores the perfect, immersive continuation of your journey into China’s romantic past.

03:00 PM

Sheng'an Temple

Located just a short drive from the city center, Sheng'an Temple offers a serene spiritual retreat that contrasts beautifully with the bustling lakeside. Perched gracefully on the slopes of Fenghuang (Phoenix) Mountain, this historic Buddhist sanctuary boasts a grand architectural complex with magnificent halls, intricate Buddhist statues, and a striking pagoda that towers over the surrounding landscape. Visitors who climb to the top are rewarded with breathtaking, panoramic views of South Lake and the distant city skyline. Surrounded by lush greenery, ancient trees, and the soothing echoes of chanting and temple bells, a stroll through Sheng'an Temple provides a peaceful, deeply reflective experience that showcases the profound religious heritage of Yueyang.

03:40 PM

YueYang Panda Garden

Nestled beautifully along the scenic banks of South Lake, the Yueyang Panda Garden is a premier ecological attraction housing the largest population of giant pandas in Central China. Spanning over 367 mu (around 24 hectares) of lush bamboo forests, rolling woodland, and tranquil wetlands, this state-of-the-art sanctuary is currently home to ten adorable giant pandas relocated from Sichuan Province. The park features nine meticulously designed panda houses equipped with advanced climate-control technology to ensure a comfortable environment year-round, alongside a dedicated science museum, an interactive education center, and sprawling outdoor playgrounds. Visitors can take scenic shuttle buses or stroll along the green paths to observe these “national treasures” closely as they munch on bamboo, play, and lounge in their habitats, making the garden an exceptional destination that seamlessly bridges wildlife conservation and unforgettable natural discovery.
