Amarna is a modern name that applies to an extensive archaeological site anciently called Akhetaten "Horizon of Aten" which was the capital of egypt during city late Eighteenth Dynasty (in the New Kingdom) rule of king Akhenaten & his beautiful wife queen Nefertiti 1353-1336 BC, his rule witnessed a huge religious reform of Egypt (monotheism period) worshiping one sole god called Aten symbolized by a solar disc with emitted rays holding ankh sign "symbol of life".

The northern city

Amarna city does not have the impressive buildings you often see in Egypt, but it is historically very important. Through the visit you can enjoy walking through the ruined foundations of the palace and stand where Akhenaten and Nefertiti came out to welcome the god Aten appearing over the dip in the mountains.

It contains a series of models of famous Amarna artifacts and the centerpiece is a full-size replica of the house of an Amarna official, which visitors can walk through. Panels has recently been installed around key monuments at the site, providing information in English.
